{"id":242122,"date":"2024-07-11T12:00:55","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T12:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/11\/copenhagens-new-copenpay-program-rewards-tourists-for-climate-friendly-actions\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:14:55","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:14:55","slug":"copenhagens-new-copenpay-program-rewards-tourists-for-climate-friendly-actions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/11\/copenhagens-new-copenpay-program-rewards-tourists-for-climate-friendly-actions\/","title":{"rendered":"Copenhagen&#8217;s new &#8220;CopenPay&#8221; program rewards tourists for climate-friendly actions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>This summer Europe\u2019s most popular hotspots are flighting back against mass tourism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Whether in Barcelona, where protestors are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/09\/barcelona-residents-fed-up-with-tourism-squirting-visitors-with-water-guns\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/09\/barcelona-residents-fed-up-with-tourism-squirting-visitors-with-water-guns\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">spraying water<\/a> at visitors, or in Athens, where overtourism has come <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/07\/09\/mayor-of-athens-overtourism-greece-not-viable-visitor-tourism-economy\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/07\/09\/mayor-of-athens-overtourism-greece-not-viable-visitor-tourism-economy\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">to a head<\/a>, European cities are rethinking how they operate an economically important industry that has resulted in fraught ties with locals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Copenhagen has an answer to turning tourism from a negative force to a positive one: by rewarding visitors for making a positive impact, by cleaning up the city or biking from place to place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitcopenhagen.com\/copenpay\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.visitcopenhagen.com\/copenpay\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">CopenPay program<\/a> offers \u201ccarrots\u201d to tourists who take climate-friendly actions through a free lunch, coffee, kayak tour or museum entrance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pilot project, which will kick off on July 15, has 24 attractions that can count towards the rewards, ranging from bike rentals to The National Gallery of Denmark.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to encourage visitors to make conscious choices that will impact the Danish capital while incentivizing them with entrances to the city\u2019s key attractions. But recently, it has also become an example of the downsides of mass tourism.<\/p>\n<p>Locals often face the impact of overtourism, which can harm their overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/bitesize\/articles\/znspn9q#zqq98hv\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/bitesize\/articles\/znspn9q#zqq98hv\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">quality of life<\/a> and cost of living.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Madrid, for instance, locals have been priced out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/housing-crisis-spains-cities-drives-rise-homelessness-tourism-booms-2024-07-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/housing-crisis-spains-cities-drives-rise-homelessness-tourism-booms-2024-07-11\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">the housing market<\/a> due to limited social housing, worsened by a growth in holiday rentals to cater to tourists. Meanwhile, Barcelona announced a ban on Airbnb-style short-lets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-21\/barcelona-plans-to-ban-all-short-term-rentals-for-tourists-from-2029\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-21\/barcelona-plans-to-ban-all-short-term-rentals-for-tourists-from-2029\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">from 2029<\/a> to free up the housing supply for locals.<\/p>\n<p>Amsterdam has also <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/07\/04\/amsterdam-nuisance-tourists-stay-away-banned-new-hotels-cruise-ships\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/07\/04\/amsterdam-nuisance-tourists-stay-away-banned-new-hotels-cruise-ships\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">clamped down<\/a> on overtourism by tightening rules around smoking weed and new hotel construction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iceland has also been on the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/06\/18\/overtourism-crackdown-iceland-new-measures-prioritize-locals-hot-spring-blue-lagoon\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/06\/18\/overtourism-crackdown-iceland-new-measures-prioritize-locals-hot-spring-blue-lagoon\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">receiving end<\/a> of a visitor boom, and it plans to introduce a tourist tax on hotels, campsites, cruise ships and more.<\/p>\n<p>These measures point to how popular European destinations have a delicate balance to strike between curbing visitor numbers without discouraging them entirely.
