That was the case when I virtually met Tim Cadogan, the British-born CEO of fundraising platform GoFundMe. When I told Tim I couldn\u2019t meet him in the evening because of childcare duties, he went out of his way to reschedule instead at a time that was less convenient for him.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, such small efforts may appear meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Shouldn\u2019t we judge a leader by their corporate track record, rather than a personal gesture? I\u2019d counter that the two are closely correlated. People\u2019s characters don\u2019t tend to change whether they deal with strategic or more trivial matters.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>19<\/p>\n<p><cite>GoFundMe\u2019s rank on Fortune\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/ranking\/change-the-world\/2022\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/ranking\/change-the-world\/2022\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/ranking\/change-the-world\/2022\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">Change the World<\/a> list 2022. <\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The way GoFundMe works is a case in point. There is no shortage of platform companies taking the lion\u2019s share of the revenues generated on their websites, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uplisting.io\/blog\/guide-to-airbnb-service-fees\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.uplisting.io\/blog\/guide-to-airbnb-service-fees\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Airbnb<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.completepayroll.com\/blog\/fares-driver-pay-and-the-financial-side-of-uber\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.completepayroll.com\/blog\/fares-driver-pay-and-the-financial-side-of-uber\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Uber<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/21445923\/platform-fees-apps-games-business-marketplace-apple-google\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/21445923\/platform-fees-apps-games-business-marketplace-apple-google\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Apple<\/a> charging fees of between 14% and 30%. GoFundMe, however, limits their share to 2.9% and 30 cents of each transaction they process, alongside an optional \u201ctip\u201d left by their users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not enough of a gesture to shield GoFundMe from criticism on review sites such as TrustPilot, where the company scores a meager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trustpilot.com\/review\/gofundme.com\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.trustpilot.com\/review\/gofundme.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">2 out of 5 stars<\/a>, despite raising over $30 billion for good causes since 2010. But its fee structure does make GoFundMe profitable, Cadogan told me, and allows the company to invest in new features, such as AI-generated narratives for fundraisers at a loss for words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>$30,000,000,000<\/p>\n<p><cite>The amount that has been raised on the platform for individuals and nonprofits since 2010.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Personally, I became convinced that the balance Cadogan\u2019s GoFundMe found is right; both from talking to the CEO himself, who comes across as a decent man with a moral compass, and from having used the service recently myself. But don\u2019t let my judgment cloud yours.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This interview has been edited for brevity.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"sc-fa0656e5-0 gIAhfJ\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Down to business <\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>Fortune:\u00a0<\/em>What is the single most important project you are working on with your company?\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tim Cadogan: At GoFundMe we are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/03\/viral-burger-king-worker-buys-first-home-gofundme-donations\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/03\/viral-burger-king-worker-buys-first-home-gofundme-donations\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">focused on helping people help each other<\/a>. We know that it is hard to ask for help.\u00a0We are currently focused on helping people by using AI coupled with the extensive data set we have built from the many millions of fundraising campaigns we have enabled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The impulse to help each other is hardwired into us; it\u2019s central to what makes us a social species.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>For example, we have recently introduced AI-enhanced storytelling options, suggested fundraiser titles, and a new class of sharing tools. The impulse to help each other is hardwired into us; it\u2019s central to what makes us a social species. I\u2019m encouraged by the way technology is enabling people to more easily connect across communities and countries to help each other. When we look at natural disasters specifically, more than $500 million of help has been raised from more than 4 million donors since 2018. Over the past five years, there has been a 90% increase in fundraisers for natural disasters on GoFundMe. That works except for the winter, when I need to get going before sunrise. We usually do about 5-7 miles on a weekday, more on weekends. Getting outside clears the mind and jump-starts the body for the day. I am lucky to have such experienced colleagues and we are constantly riffing on ideas and issues together. I also have a group of trusted folks I\u2019ve worked with over the years and it\u2019s great to be able to share challenges and situations with each other. Finally, I have a few running partners with whom I\u2019ve done big endurance events; they give me a special and different perspective.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting personal<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What book have you read, either recently or in the past, that has inspired you?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I just finished Cahokia Jazz by Francis Spufford. An extremely creative and compelling book. The ability of the author to imagine a different version of history, transport you into that world with a visceral sense of being there, and produce such a powerful story was remarkable.
