Ariana Grande<\/strong><\/a> isn\u2019t a stranger to criticism, but when it comes to her voice, she isn\u2019t playing around. The 31-year-old Wicked<\/em><\/a> star sat down with Evan Ross Katz on the \u201cShut Up Evan\u201d podcast on Tuesday, July 9, and she addressed the backlash she received over what sounded like a Glinda-esque octave fluctuation<\/a> during a previous interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean you see male actors, sure people make jokes here and there as well, but it\u2019s always after the fact \u2018Oh wow, how dedicated to his craft! What an amazing transformation! He\u2019s a brilliant performer!’\u201d Ariana said, referring to the double standards of the entertainment industry. \u201cBut then it\u2019s like, god forbid I sneeze like Glinda or something, [then] it\u2019s just that I am crazy . . . it\u2019s the weirdest thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

While pointing out that voice fluctuation is \u201ca normal thing people do, especially if you have a large range,\u201d Ariana also noted that she had just spent \u201ca long time playing a character every single day,\u201d referring to her Wicked<\/em> film character, Glinda.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I trained] my voice to do different things for a long time before leaving for London and before any of this; muscle memory is a real thing,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Last month, a video of the \u201c7 Rings\u201d singer went viral from her \u201cPopCrushed\u201d podcast interview, in which she was heard drastically changing her voice from high to low. After the clip went viral on social media, Ariana clarified that she \u201cintentionally\u201d does this with her speaking voice.<\/p>\n

In part 1 of the upcoming Wicked<\/em> film, Ariana sings her character\u2019s challenging Broadway musical tunes, which required her to reach higher pitches \u2014 specifically in the hits \u201cDefying Gravity\u201d and \u201cPopular.\u201d<\/p>\n

While speaking with Penn Badgley<\/strong> on \u201cPopCrushed,\u201d Ariana opened up about her vocal training to play Glinda, who is an \u201copera soprano\u201d unlike the pop star\u2019s singing voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a very different placement in the voice, and I was just training it and training it because even though the notes were there, it\u2019s a different placement and singing them completely differently so I wanted to train my muscles,\u201d Ariana explained. \u201cI would go every day and train to learn the tools that I needed to sing and to be Glinda through and through.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
