But even as the company splits with those employees, it has found that some personnel are irreplaceable.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Nike is bringing a 30-year veteran executive from the company out of retirement to help in its recovery efforts. Former senior executive Tom Peddie, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20200414005870\/en\/NIKE-Names-Ann-Hebert-VP-GM-North\/?feedref=JjAwJuNHiystnCoBq_hl-fLcmYSZsqlD_XPbplM8Ta6D8R-QU5o2AvY8bhI9uvWSD8DYIYv4TIC1g1u0AKcacnnViVjtb72bOP4-4nHK5iej_DoWrIhfD31cAxcB60aE\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20200414005870\/en\/NIKE-Names-Ann-Hebert-VP-GM-North\/?feedref=JjAwJuNHiystnCoBq_hl-fLcmYSZsqlD_XPbplM8Ta6D8R-QU5o2AvY8bhI9uvWSD8DYIYv4TIC1g1u0AKcacnnViVjtb72bOP4-4nHK5iej_DoWrIhfD31cAxcB60aE\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">retired from the shoe giant in 2020<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-08\/nike-brings-back-retired-executive-tom-peddie-to-mend-retail-relationships\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-08\/nike-brings-back-retired-executive-tom-peddie-to-mend-retail-relationships\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">will take on<\/a> the role of vice president of marketplace partners after Nike\u2019s relationships with shoe sellers have faltered. Peddie previously led global sales at Nike\u2019s\u00a0 before becoming the company\u2019s general manager of emerging markets and heading its North American geography<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Peddie] is a seasoned leader with a proven business track record and experience building high-performing teams,\u201d Nike told <em>Fortune<\/em> in a statement. \u201cWe are excited to have him return to Nike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nike has been confounded by competition from a new guard of sneaker brands like Hoka and On that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/15\/converse-layoffs-nike-2-billion-saving-plan\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/15\/converse-layoffs-nike-2-billion-saving-plan\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">soared during the pandemic<\/a> by catering to casual runners. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/overstock-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/overstock-com\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond<\/a> failing to offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/nike-air-product-lineup-multiyear-innovation-cycle\/713192\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/nike-air-product-lineup-multiyear-innovation-cycle\/713192\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">innovative products<\/a> to attract Gen Z shoppers, Nike has also struggled to maintain relationships with retailers as it invested heavily in a direct-to-consumer strategy that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernretail.co\/operations\/why-nikes-dtc-pivot-didnt-pan-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.modernretail.co\/operations\/why-nikes-dtc-pivot-didnt-pan-out\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">ultimately hurt<\/a> the company.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Nike\u2019s best efforts to restructure leadership, refocus marketing efforts, and tighten supply as part of its cost-saving plan, it has yet to see meaningful positive results. The company reported last month a 2% decrease in fourth-quarter revenue to $12.6 billion and is expected to see 2025 sales fall by mid-single digits. Despite analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nikes-sales-to-fall-this-year-as-turnaround-plan-continues-2024-6\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nikes-sales-to-fall-this-year-as-turnaround-plan-continues-2024-6\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">expecting a 1% increase<\/a> in sales, the company instead predicts a 10% dip in first-quarter sales alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company had its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/bill-murphy-jr\/nike-worst-day-history-28-billion-john-donahoe-innovation-dtc-channels.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.inc.com\/bill-murphy-jr\/nike-worst-day-history-28-billion-john-donahoe-innovation-dtc-channels.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">worst day<\/a> in its history following the June earnings call, losing $28 million in market capitalization in a single trading day.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Retail whiplash<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nike has struggled in large part because of its rapid pivot to a digital platform, which the company at one point believed could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/latest-news-headlines\/nike-levels-up-digital-game-in-wake-of-coronavirus-hit-59265634\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/latest-news-headlines\/nike-levels-up-digital-game-in-wake-of-coronavirus-hit-59265634\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">drive 50% of sales<\/a>. In 2017, the company began its investment in its DTC strategy and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernretail.co\/retailers\/as-nike-cuts-ties-with-retailers-competitors-look-to-take-its-place-in-wholesale\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.modernretail.co\/retailers\/as-nike-cuts-ties-with-retailers-competitors-look-to-take-its-place-in-wholesale\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">cut ties<\/a> with retailers Big 5 Sporting Goods, Dunham\u2019s Sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/urban-outfitters\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/urban-outfitters\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">Urban Outfitters<\/a>, Dillard\u2019s, and Zappos.<\/p>\n<p>This pivot was rooted in logic, Jessica Ram\u00edrez, senior research analyst at Jane Hali &amp; Associate, told <em>Fortune<\/em>. Nike has had a history of understanding where consumers\u2019 interests lie and had strong allegiance from its sneakerhead audiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a beauty in having a strong direct-to-consumer channel because you\u2019re able to connect with consumers on what they want. You\u2019re able to have data from them,\u201d Ram\u00edrez said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s where Nike always excelled, in really understanding their customer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s efforts were initially a success, with Nike reporting a <a href=\"https:\/\/s1.q4cdn.com\/806093406\/files\/doc_financials\/2022\/q4\/FY22-Q4-Combined-NIKE-Press-Release-Schedules-FINAL%5B1%5D.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/s1.q4cdn.com\/806093406\/files\/doc_financials\/2022\/q4\/FY22-Q4-Combined-NIKE-Press-Release-Schedules-FINAL%5B1%5D.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">14% increase to $18.7 billion<\/a> in DTC revenue in 2022\u2019s fourth quarter. But over the course of the pandemic, as running became a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/01\/peloton-bike-unicorn-hyatt-hotel-john-foley\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/01\/peloton-bike-unicorn-hyatt-hotel-john-foley\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">popular and affordable hobby<\/a>, brands like Hoka, On, and Brooks grew in popularity due to its appeal to casual and beginner runners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNike was always known for having the innovation and the technology, but it was for the runner that does a marathon\u2014the very elite runner,\u201d Ram\u00edrez said. \u201cAnd they never looked at the everyday runner. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>By April 2022, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nike-feeling-limitations-of-direct-to-consumer-dtc-2022-4\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nike-feeling-limitations-of-direct-to-consumer-dtc-2022-4\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">recognized the limitations<\/a> of its DTC strategy, part of a broader trend of DTC companies such as Native and Quip seeking out retail partners to relieve the pressure of responsibilities associated with e-commerce, such as shipping and digital innovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u200b\u201cNike thought they could do a lot of it themselves, but they aren\u2019t as capable as they thought they were,\u201d Sam Poser, equities analyst at Williams Trading, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nike-broke-up-with-retailers-now-its-trying-to-win-them-back-6c0b475c\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nike-broke-up-with-retailers-now-its-trying-to-win-them-back-6c0b475c\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">told the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> last summer.<\/p>\n<p>The shoe giant has since tried to mend its relationship with retailers. Last June, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/dsw\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/dsw\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">Designer Brands<\/a> and Macy\u2019s announced they would start selling Nike products. After Footlocker\u2019s sales tanked in 2022 in part because of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/foot-locker-shares-slump-nike-business-dents-2022-forecasts-2022-02-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/foot-locker-shares-slump-nike-business-dents-2022-forecasts-2022-02-25\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">limited access<\/a> to Nike inventory, it began selling basketball shoes and sneakers adorned with the brand\u2019s famous swoop in greater abundance in February 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Along with strengthening ties to retail partners, Nike is also trying to win over price-sensitive shoppers. Last week it launched a line of shoes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/nike-plots-100-and-less-sneakers-lure-price-conscious-shoppers-2024-06-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/nike-plots-100-and-less-sneakers-lure-price-conscious-shoppers-2024-06-28\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">for $100 and under<\/a>\u2014relatively affordable in the market\u2014in order to lure back customers put off by its hefty price tags.
