{"id":241337,"date":"2024-07-09T17:24:26","date_gmt":"2024-07-09T17:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/09\/over-80-of-china-businesses-already-use-genai-higher-than-world-average\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:15:03","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:15:03","slug":"over-80-of-china-businesses-already-use-genai-higher-than-world-average","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/09\/over-80-of-china-businesses-already-use-genai-higher-than-world-average\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 80% of China businesses already use GenAI, higher than world average"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-2161126793-e1720529472559.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s business leaders are barrelling ahead of their global peers in adopting generative AI, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.com\/en\/offers\/generative-ai-summary-global-survey-results-reg.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.sas.com\/en\/offers\/generative-ai-summary-global-survey-results-reg.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">a new survey<\/a> from North Carolina-based software company SAS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Over 80% of Chinese business leaders surveyed are currently using GenAI in their operations, above the global average of 54% and the U.S. at 65%, according to SAS\u2019s survey, conducted with Coleman Parkes Research. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is noticeably ahead, not only in the practical aspects of orchestrating AI into their existing systems and processes, but also in embedding trust by preparing to adhere to GenAI regulations,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.com\/en\/offers\/generative-ai-summary-global-survey-results-reg.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.sas.com\/en\/offers\/generative-ai-summary-global-survey-results-reg.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">the report says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>China is turning to generative AI to help manage its \u201cmassive population\u201d and the data collected from them, Bryan Harris, chief technology officer at SAS, suggests. \u201cPioneering work in generative AI can give China a competitive advantage in the world, with regards to unlocking value and data,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, safety and security issues like hallucination, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/06\/27\/cybersecurity-is-team-sport-amid-generative-ai-based-attacks-tech-experts-accenture\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/06\/27\/cybersecurity-is-team-sport-amid-generative-ai-based-attacks-tech-experts-accenture\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">deepfakes<\/a>, and data privacy are pushing governments to quickly develop rules around the new technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SAS\u2019s survey reports that around 70% of Asia-Pacific business leaders report feel \u201cfully prepared\u201d or \u201cmoderately prepared\u201d to comply with incoming generative AI regulations, compared to 59% in North America and 52% in Northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Beijing released <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/08\/08\/chatgpt-china-catch-up-arms-race-global-wealth-power-influence\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/08\/08\/chatgpt-china-catch-up-arms-race-global-wealth-power-influence\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">some of the world\u2019s first rules<\/a> governing generative AI. The rules required chatbots to adhere to \u201ccore socialist values\u201d and protect national security. Yet penalties were not as strict as observers feared, which analysts read as Beijing signaling support for the fledgling industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/30\/biden-executive-order-ai-artificial-intelligence-smart-strong-ahead-experts\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/30\/biden-executive-order-ai-artificial-intelligence-smart-strong-ahead-experts\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">passed an executive order<\/a> that, among other measures, called upon AI developers to share safety test data with the U.S. government. Then, earlier this year, the European Union passed its own comprehensive set of AI regulations, dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/14\/eu-ai-act-passed-now-real-work-begins\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/14\/eu-ai-act-passed-now-real-work-begins\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">the AI Act<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, AI companies may find it difficult to navigate a patchwork of different AI rules. \u201cIt\u2019s good to have regulations. It\u2019s just not good to have three different ones,\u201d Brian says. \u201cIt\u2019s inefficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>China\u2019s AI investment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since the release of OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT in 2022, Chinese tech firms large and small <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/08\/08\/chatgpt-china-catch-up-arms-race-global-wealth-power-influence\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/08\/08\/chatgpt-china-catch-up-arms-race-global-wealth-power-influence\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">are rushing to create<\/a> their own large language models and generative AI programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Big tech firms like Baidu, Alibaba, and JD.com are investing in their own large language models; Baidu claims its ERNIE LLM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/big-tech\/article\/3238197\/baidu-says-ai-chatbot-ernie-now-matches-openais-gpt-4-unveils-new-enterprise-tools\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/big-tech\/article\/3238197\/baidu-says-ai-chatbot-ernie-now-matches-openais-gpt-4-unveils-new-enterprise-tools\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">outperforms<\/a> the latest version of GPT-4 in some Chinese-language tasks. Several Chinese startups\u2014like 01.AI, founded by <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/05\/13\/china-still-waiting-for-chatgpt-moment-kai-fu-lee-ai-expert-wanzhi-chatbot-openai\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/05\/13\/china-still-waiting-for-chatgpt-moment-kai-fu-lee-ai-expert-wanzhi-chatbot-openai\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">former Google China president<\/a> Kai-Fu Lee\u2014are also racing to release chatbots and other generative AI products.<\/p>\n<p>Yet China\u2019s AI companies are also struggling with a shortage of AI chips, made worse by <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/03\/11\/us-curb-china-access-cutting-edge-chips-might-tighten-controls-commerce-secretary-raimondo\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/03\/11\/us-curb-china-access-cutting-edge-chips-might-tighten-controls-commerce-secretary-raimondo\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. controls<\/a> barring the export of advanced processors (like those made from Nvidia) to China. Startups are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/06\/28\/china-ai-companies-ration-use-services-not-enough-chips-computing-power-export-controls\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/06\/28\/china-ai-companies-ration-use-services-not-enough-chips-computing-power-export-controls\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> rationing the use of their products due to a lack of computing power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, iFlyTek\u2013one of China\u2019s leading AI developers\u2013said it was likely to post a net loss of up to $64.53 million for the first half of the year, which <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Business\/China-tech\/China-AI-leader-iFlytek-dips-into-red-under-ultimate-U.S.-pressure\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Business\/China-tech\/China-AI-leader-iFlytek-dips-into-red-under-ultimate-U.S.-pressure\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">it partly blamed<\/a> on the \u201cultimate exertion of pressures from the U.S.\u201d in a Shenzhen stock filing. Shares are down 5.4% since Friday\u2019s close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll countries are looking for information advantage as a result of AI,\u201d Harris says, from the level of national security all the way down to commercial applications. \u201cGenerative AI becomes the new nuclear arms race in that regard,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet Chinese companies have some advantages, such as being \u201cmore aggressive\u201d than their U.S. peers when it comes to combining datasets and applying them to AI models, Harris says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s optimistic that Chinese companies like Alibaba can still catch up to their U.S. peers like OpenAI, even with a shortage of cutting-edge GPUs. \u201cWhat\u2019s cool about this whole movement is that there\u2019s innovation happening almost simultaneously around the world.
