Manufacturer Hero Cosmetics also recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/hero-cosmetics-names-alix-earle-as-the-first-global-face-of-brand-302058760.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/hero-cosmetics-names-alix-earle-as-the-first-global-face-of-brand-302058760.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">netted<\/a> a partnership with content creator Alix Earle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Founder and CEO Ju Rhyu told <em>Fortune<\/em> she came up with the idea for the brand while living as an expat in South Korea while working for <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/samsung-electronics\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/samsung-electronics\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">Samsung<\/a> in 2012. At the time, only two types of hydrocolloid patches existed in K-Beauty: medical and cosmetic-oriented. The entrepreneur wanted to bridge the gap and bring pimple patches to the U.S., seeing an opportunity in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/country-commercial-guides\/south-korea-cosmetics\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/country-commercial-guides\/south-korea-cosmetics\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">$3.9 billion K-Beauty industry<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So in 2017, when she was 37 years old, Rhyu launched her brand along with cofounders Dwight Lee and Andrew Lee, capitalizing on their corporate expertise and a cool $50,000 the trio had pooled together.<\/p>\n<p>After agreeing that Mighty Patch needed to be cash flow positive and profitable, the trio set out to find a manufacturer. Rhyu compiled a list of potential business partners, and told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4ec5rES2WTQ\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4ec5rES2WTQ\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Female Startup Club<\/a> she found the companies from the boxes of acne patches at a local pharmacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of the 10 manufacturers Rhyu contacted through cold emails, only two responded. She said the final match was \u201cluck,\u201d and Hero Cosmetics still works with it today who. Rhyu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4ec5rES2WTQ\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4ec5rES2WTQ\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">says<\/a> the manufacturer makes \u201cthe best quality patch in Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Big Launch<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Armed with a business partner and a mission to disrupt the Band-Aid aisle, Hero earned its first 10,000-unit order.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Hero began selling the Mighty Patch, including on e-commerce giant <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>. But the company initially couldn\u2019t get the product featured on Amazon Prime, which can <a href=\"https:\/\/sell.amazon.com\/programs\/buy-with-prime\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/sell.amazon.com\/programs\/buy-with-prime\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">increase orders by 25%<\/a> as members get free shipping and other perks.<\/p>\n<p>A breakthrough came after some trial and error.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pricing actually was kind of an accident, because we were selling on Amazon,\u201d Rhyu said. \u201cThere were already some players that were a lot cheaper at around $5. And actually wanted to place our products at $9.99. But the funny story is we couldn\u2019t get Amazon Prime. And we were sort of playing around with different things to see how we can unlock Prime. And one of the ways was we increased our price [to] $12.99.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rhyu chose to stick with the newer price tag after selling out in just 90 days. And in 2022, she shepherded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/gabbyshacknai\/2022\/09\/06\/hero-cosmetics-acquired-by-church--dwight-for-630-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/gabbyshacknai\/2022\/09\/06\/hero-cosmetics-acquired-by-church--dwight-for-630-million\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">$630 million acquisition<\/a> with Church &amp; Dwight.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Breaking into the beauty industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Pimple patches may have only recently become a beauty staple for Americans, but they\u2019ve existed in South Korea since the early 2010\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Hero Cosmetics first entered the market in the U.S., Rhyu said there were only a few competitors on Amazon. Now, the beauty industry is flooded with all types of pimple patches.
