I think you\u2019ve got to make space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath, the opposition party labeled Starmer a \u201cpart-time Prime Minister\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Conservatives\/status\/1807796490896621680\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/Conservatives\/status\/1807796490896621680\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, his predecessor, Rishi Sunak\u2014who is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/07\/05\/rishi-sunak-prime-minister-uk-general-election-multimillion-dollar-corporate-payday\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/07\/05\/rishi-sunak-prime-minister-uk-general-election-multimillion-dollar-corporate-payday\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">richer than the King of England<\/a> and served as PM from 2022 until he lost last week\u2019s election \u2014scoffed: \u201cI haven\u2019t finished at six ever.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Downing Street declined <em>Fortune\u2019s<\/em> request for comment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Work-life balance in leadership is rare\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Nobody likes to work well into their evenings or weekends. The only problem? As Sunak (and many CEOs featured in <em>Fortune)<\/em> have pointed out<em>, <\/em>being a leader isn\u2019t a normal 9-5 job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Doug Baird, CEO of the people advisory business New Street Consulting Group, tells <em>Fortune<\/em> that the pace of the world has changed dramatically, and leaders need to always be on if they want to keep up with today\u2019s high standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting that Sir Kier Starmer has this goal of not working past 6 pm on Fridays, but leadership is not like that,\u201d he added. \u201cI suspect most leaders in business may have a little chuckle at this lofty and unrealistic self-made deadline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould the answerphone be on if a world leader called him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But realistically, there\u2019s a big difference between being available and being on the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t expect him to put on his out-of-office,\u201d Lewis Maleh, CEO of the global executive recruitment agency Bentley Lewis, says while adding that leaders need to balance being on call and switching off for the good of their health and that of the business\u2014or in this case, the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important for leaders to protect their energy and manage their time in the right way,\u201d he adds. \u201cThe road is long and the CEO position is all-encompassing.
