That translated into 11-hour shift patterns for labor-intensive work.<\/p>\n<p>Inevitably, the idea of fulfilling the same weekly hours in a shorter timespan had adverse consequences for Asda employees. Staff described the shifts as \u201cphysically demanding,\u201d while the early starts and late finishes left those depending on public transport in a bind.<\/p>\n<p>Parents who work at Asda also faced issues coordinating childcare and school pick-ups and drop-offs under the 11-hour shifts.<\/p>\n<p>The group decided not to continue with the condensed four-day workweek, but is trialing a flexible 39-hour week over five days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to test different flexible working patterns to assess how these can benefit our colleagues and our business,\u201d a spokesperson for Asda told <em>Fortune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Asda isn\u2019t the only company that has faced fitness issues from staff after trying to introduce a condensed working pattern.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The insurance company Domestic &amp; General introduced a similar condensed working week but also faced complaints from staff who were left psychologically exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalf the team absolutely loved it, half of the team didn\u2019t like it at all\u2014it makes for a longer day, it\u2019s a bit more intense,\u201d Crummack told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/07\/06\/asda-shelves-four-day-week-trials-after-staff-complaints\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/07\/06\/asda-shelves-four-day-week-trials-after-staff-complaints\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\"><em>The Telegraph<\/em><\/a>. \u201cFor them, spreading the work across five was easier to manage psychologically,\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Crummack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-21\/four-day-work-week-uk-study-finds-majority-of-employers-shifting\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-21\/four-day-work-week-uk-study-finds-majority-of-employers-shifting\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">told <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>that companies implementing a four-day week tend to lose \u201cflexibility\u201d and inevitably force workers to pick up extra work on the fifth day anyway.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to successfully bring in a 4-day week<\/h2>\n<p>Asda\u2019s and D&amp;G\u2019s announcements came just days before South Cambridgeshire council hailed the resounding success of its four-day week trial.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s 450 employees carried out the biggest-ever public sector trial of a four-day workweek.<\/p>\n<p>Among the benefits was a 39% reduction in staff turnover, which helped save the council \u00a3371,500 ($476,000), thanks to lower staff agency costs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/article\/2024\/jul\/08\/largest-uk-public-sector-trial-four-day-week-sees-huge-benefits-research-finds-?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/article\/2024\/jul\/08\/largest-uk-public-sector-trial-four-day-week-sees-huge-benefits-research-finds-?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the council said it processed 15% more major planning applications, while household planning applications were completed a week and a half earlier, indicating a huge productivity boost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know we cannot compete on salary alone and have needed to find bold new ways of tackling our recruitment and retention issues,\u201d John Williams, the lead South Cambridgeshire council member for resources, told <em>The Guardian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Four-day week trials have increased in recent years, with varying results showing success isn\u2019t guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>The most successful trials tend to see employees shorten their hours for the same pay, as with South Cambridgeshire Council.
