{"id":239674,"date":"2024-07-04T11:28:46","date_gmt":"2024-07-04T11:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/04\/amsterdam-plans-to-ban-cruises-to-keep-nuisance-tourists-away\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:15:30","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:15:30","slug":"amsterdam-plans-to-ban-cruises-to-keep-nuisance-tourists-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/04\/amsterdam-plans-to-ban-cruises-to-keep-nuisance-tourists-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Amsterdam plans to ban cruises to keep \u2018nuisance\u2019 tourists away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Amsterdam is fed up with its tourist deluge.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Dutch city attracts all types of visitors\u2014whether they\u2019re coming to party or visit tulip fields\u2014 but in recent years has become a victim of overtourism and has tried to cap its number of tourists.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-65107405\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-65107405\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Stay Away<\/a>\u201d campaign was part of its efforts to discourage travelers from tainting Amsterdam with their \u201cnuisance,\u201d as Deputy Mayor Sofyan Mbarki put it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now Amsterdam is planning to crack down on cruise ships too.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch capital city plans to limit cruise ships in its harbor to just 100 in 2026, down from 190 currently, before banning them outright by 2035, Amsterdam\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsterdam.nl\/nieuws\/nieuwsoverzicht\/amsterdam-halveert-zeecruiseschepen\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.amsterdam.nl\/nieuws\/nieuwsoverzicht\/amsterdam-halveert-zeecruiseschepen\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">council announced<\/a> last week. Amsterdam wanted to redirect cruise liners to terminals outside the main city area as they brought tourists who crowded the streets. In 2022, the city\u2019s mayor blamed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-66264226\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-66264226\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">cruise tourists<\/a> for swarming the city but doing little for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The record-high tourist numbers, up from 12.6 million in 2019 to <a href=\"https:\/\/etias.com\/articles\/amsterdam-foreign-visitors-new-highs-2023#:~:text=In%20addition%20to%20overnight%20stays,year%20before%20the%20coronavirus%20pandemic.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/etias.com\/articles\/amsterdam-foreign-visitors-new-highs-2023#:~:text=In%20addition%20to%20overnight%20stays,year%20before%20the%20coronavirus%20pandemic.\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">15.1 million<\/a> in 2023, have spurred the crackdown. This spike in visitors has overwhelmed the city\u2019s infrastructure, such as its public transport networks and quaint streets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amsterdam is home to some of the most picturesque water canals and museums. But over the years, it\u2019s gained the reputation of a party city\u2014one it\u2019s trying to distance itself from. The Dutch capital has tightened rules on <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/amsterdam-overtourism-cruise-ban-pollution-a810a19f5ef93e8da172ead35ee26c8f\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/amsterdam-overtourism-cruise-ban-pollution-a810a19f5ef93e8da172ead35ee26c8f\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">smoking weed<\/a>, especially in its red-light district, and banned new hotels from being built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/19\/1245809974\/amsterdam-hotel-ban#:~:text=Amsterdam%20bans%20new%20hotels%20after,20%20million%20in%202023%20%3A%20NPR&amp;text=Life%20Kit-,Amsterdam%20bans%20new%20hotels%20after%20tourist%20overnight%20stays%20hit%2020,built%20if%20one%20shuts%20down.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/19\/1245809974\/amsterdam-hotel-ban#:~:text=Amsterdam%20bans%20new%20hotels%20after,20%20million%20in%202023%20%3A%20NPR&amp;text=Life%20Kit-,Amsterdam%20bans%20new%20hotels%20after%20tourist%20overnight%20stays%20hit%2020,built%20if%20one%20shuts%20down.\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">earlier this year<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cruises aren\u2019t the main avenue to enter Amsterdam, but they\u2019re certainly among the most polluting forms of it. One cruise, carrying thousands of passengers at once, can result in the same levels of emissions per day as 30,000 trucks, <a href=\"https:\/\/ce.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/CE_Delft_210101_Emissions_of_the_Marella_Discovery_Def.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/ce.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/CE_Delft_210101_Emissions_of_the_Marella_Discovery_Def.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">a 2021 study<\/a> found.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For similar reasons, European cities such as Dubrovnik and Santorini have also capped cruise ship numbers. Venice has enacted a \u201ctourist tax\u201d of \u20ac5 ($5.4) to help <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/25\/venice-charging-day-trippers-5-entry-but-angry-locals-floating-city-theme-park\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/25\/venice-charging-day-trippers-5-entry-but-angry-locals-floating-city-theme-park\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">fight overtourism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to cutting cruise emissions, Amsterdam will require boats to only shore power, an alternative to the existing diesel fuel that reduces pollution, by 2027. It\u2019s also looking to cut the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/18\/world\/europe\/amsterdam-tourism-hotel-stop.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/18\/world\/europe\/amsterdam-tourism-hotel-stop.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">river cruises<\/a> in its waters.<\/p>\n<p>All the efforts to restrict tourism could prove counterproductive for Amsterdam as it stands to lose between \u20ac46 million ($50 million) and \u20ac103 million ($111 million) in revenue, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-03\/amsterdam-to-phase-out-cruise-ships-force-use-of-onshore-power?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_campaign=copy\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-03\/amsterdam-to-phase-out-cruise-ships-force-use-of-onshore-power?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_campaign=copy\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Bloomberg reported<\/a>. The City Council recognizes this but thinks it \u201ccannot afford to sit back and wait for things to get worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t do this now, we will become less attractive as a city for people and companies.
