In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lPvqvt55l3A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC interview<\/a>, Suleyman minimized worries about AI firms using intellectual property, saying that the practice of freely using publicly accessible online content has been established for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that with respect to content that\u2019s already on the open web, the social contract of that content since the \u201990s has been that it is fair use. Anyone can copy it, recreate with it, reproduce with it,\u201d he commented. \u201cThat has been \u2018freeware,\u2019 if you like, that\u2019s been the understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman: the social contract for content that is on the open web is that it&#8217;s &#8220;freeware&#8221; for training AI models <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FN1xrqnJC0\">pic.twitter.com\/FN1xrqnJC0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tsarathustra (@tsarnick) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tsarnick\/status\/1805809836854329450?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 26, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The tech leader added that unless a publisher or news organization explicitly requests not to \u201cscrape or crawl\u201d their content other than for indexing, AI companies can use it to train AI models.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThere\u2019s a separate category where a website, or a publisher, or a news organization had explicitly said \u2018do not scrape or crawl me for any other reason than indexing me so that other people can find this content.\u2019 That\u2019s a grey area, and I think it\u2019s going to work its way through the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suleyman\u2019s comment about the unclear legal boundaries for AI model training is reflected through recent legal actions. Following his remarks, the Center for Investigative Reporting filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/CIR_Lawsuit_Against-OpenAI_06.27.24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> against OpenAI and its principal investor, Microsoft, alleging unauthorized use of the nonprofit\u2019s content without permission or compensation.<\/p>\n<p>According to the docket, AI checker <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/5-best-ai-content-detectors\/\">Copyleaks<\/a> found that nearly 60 per cent of the responses provided by ChatGPT-3.5 contained some form of plagiarized content, and over 45 per cent contained text that was identical to pre-existing content.<\/p>\n<p>This lawsuit is in line with similar legal challenges from <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/microsoft-seeks-dismissal-in-new-york-times-lawsuit-cites-doomsday-futurology\/\">The New York Times<\/a> and around eight other media organizations.<\/p>\n<h2>Users react to Microsoft CEO AI comments<\/h2>\n<p>Several users posted their reactions on X, disagreeing with the Microsoft CEO\u2019s view on available content being part of a \u201csocial contract,\u201d free for use to train AI models.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Wrong, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mustafasuleyman?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@mustafasuleyman<\/a>.
