Meta is updating its \u201cMade with AI\u201d labels after widespread complaints from photographers that the company was mistakenly flagging non-AI-generated content. In an update<\/a>, the company said that it will change the wording to \u201cAI info\u201d because the current labels \u201cweren\u2019t always aligned with people\u2019s expectations and didn\u2019t always provide enough context.\u201d<\/p>\n The company <\/a> the \u201cMade with AI\u201d labels earlier this year after criticism from <\/a> about its \u201cmanipulated media\u201d policy. Meta said that, like many of its peers, it would rely on \u201cindustry standard\u201d signals to determine when generative AI had been used to create an image. However, it wasn\u2019t long before photographers began noticing that Facebook and Instagram were applying the badge on images that <\/a> been created with AI. According to tests conducted <\/a>, <\/em>photos edited with Adobe\u2019s generative fill tool in Photoshop would trigger the label even if the edit was only to a \u201ctiny speck.\u201d<\/p>\n While Meta didn\u2019t name Photoshop, the company said in its update that \u201csome content that included minor modifications using AI, such as retouching tools, included industry standard indicators\u201d that triggered the \u201cMade with AI\u201d badge. \u201cWhile we work with companies across the industry to improve the process so our labeling approach better matches our intent, we\u2019re updating the \u2018Made with AI\u2019 label to \u2018AI info\u2019 across our apps, which people can click for more information.\u201d<\/p>\n Somewhat confusingly, the new \u201cAI info\u201d labels won\u2019t actually have any details about what AI-enabled tools may have been used for the image in question. A Meta spokesperson confirmed that the contextual menu that appears when users tap on the badge will remain the same. That menu has a generic description of generative AI and notes that Meta may add the notice \u201cwhen people share content that has AI signals our systems can read.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
