{"id":238414,"date":"2024-07-01T13:08:47","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T13:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/01\/trainline-workers-would-rather-commute-4-hours-than-live-near-office\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:15:45","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:15:45","slug":"trainline-workers-would-rather-commute-4-hours-than-live-near-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/01\/trainline-workers-would-rather-commute-4-hours-than-live-near-office\/","title":{"rendered":"Trainline: Workers would rather commute 4 hours than live near office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-1400704910-e1719833881613.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, an exodus of professionals left their urban jungle flats for sprawling suburban homes in more scenic rural areas\u2014and now despite cities bouncing back and offices reopening, they\u2019d rather commute for hours on end on a train (or plane) than give up their newfound life on the outskirts.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>New research by Trainline shows that the number of people in the U.K. spending more than 3 hours getting to work and back\u2014otherwise known as, \u201csuper commuting\u201d\u2014has doubled since before the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although super commuters are defined as those with journeys to work of least 90 minutes one-way, the train ticket platform found that most actually spend at least 2 hours traveling in each direction.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps surprisingly, most super commuters aren\u2019t those lucky few who only have to show face in the office once in a blue moon.<\/p>\n<p>Most professionals who moved far from the office during the pandemic say they have hybrid working to thank (or blame) for their new commuting habit and for being able to keep their after-work country lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>On average, super commuters are heading into the office three days a week and as a result, wasting at least 12 hours\u2014more than an entire work day\u2014on a train each week, just to sit at their desks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite having less time to actually enjoy their suburban life than those living close to the office, three-quarters of super commuters said they are happier for it, and over a third reported enjoying a better work-life balance.<\/p>\n<p>Others admitted that the hefty journey is worth it for their reduced cost of living on the outskirts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Super commuting is a global phenomenon<\/h2>\n<p>Super commuting isn\u2019t a U.K.-specific trend. Across the pond in the States, the mean distance to work rose from 10 miles in 2019 to 27 miles at the end of 2023, according to a study from payroll processing and HR services company <a href=\"https:\/\/prod.gusto-assets.com\/media\/Americans-Now-Live-Farther-From-Their-Employers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/prod.gusto-assets.com\/media\/Americans-Now-Live-Farther-From-Their-Employers.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Gusto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to their data, millennials\u2014who are mostly in their thirties and settling down\u2014live the farthest away from their employer.<\/p>\n<p>Take hairstylist Katlin Jay: The 30-year-old travels 650 miles on a plane from Charlotte, N.C. to New York on a biweekly basis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, she told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/m-super-commuter-hairstylist-fly-181743009.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGFpbHltYWlsLmNvLnVrLw&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJI-tthA2YnFB3edDEfZBu8bBlhGN9JllMScY2Qrh-TQZ7RZ6jUX9SA4o1OR9OWnlk2nOs0-ErwlmHysAl6CWrhZzHVgp5bbNyMpl5XbX6xX1Y70U9MIzb83PIBcFESBjw3cMfI95AVfsr840k82N0M8H3iNfFHeYteh3RP24oz0\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/m-super-commuter-hairstylist-fly-181743009.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGFpbHltYWlsLmNvLnVrLw&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJI-tthA2YnFB3edDEfZBu8bBlhGN9JllMScY2Qrh-TQZ7RZ6jUX9SA4o1OR9OWnlk2nOs0-ErwlmHysAl6CWrhZzHVgp5bbNyMpl5XbX6xX1Y70U9MIzb83PIBcFESBjw3cMfI95AVfsr840k82N0M8H3iNfFHeYteh3RP24oz0\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">New York Post<\/a><\/em> that she is paying less money on travel (at around $1,000 a month) than she would on rent if she lived near her Upper West side job.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, even in Germany, a 32-year-old director is flying across the continent to London for work to get the best of both worlds. However, to those enticed by Seb\u2019s way of life, he warned in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/super-commute-5-hours-hamburg-to-london-not-sustainable-2024-6\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/super-commute-5-hours-hamburg-to-london-not-sustainable-2024-6\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Business Insider<\/a><\/em> that the 5-hour commute won\u2019t be sustainable in the long run.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But be warned: You may be asked to move back\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Even now that it\u2019s clear most companies will require their workers in the office for part of the week\u2014and having undoubtedly heard their colleagues complain about their long commute\u2014Trainline\u2019s research found that over half of city-living workers are eyeing up the super commute club.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why?
