China Three Gorges Renewables Group, a subsidiary of the country\u2019s largest hydropower company, plans to build a plant with a 16-gigawatt capacity and a five-gigawatt storage facility, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-28\/china-three-gorges-invests-11-billion-in-desert-power-projects\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bloomberg;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of China\u2019s aim to build 455 gigawatts worth of renewable energy projects in the desert by 2030. This plant is being constructed in Inner Mongolia, which will get 135 gigawatts of the total planned output.<\/p>\n<p>The China Three Gorges Corporation is looking to diversify its energy sources as building large hydro dams is becoming less feasible. According to Three Gorges, wind and solar generation from the plant will depend on grid accessibility. The coal plant is set to start operations in three years.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s somewhat disappointing that the new plant will have a coal power element, though it&#8217;s not fully surprising given the way China has bristled at renewable energy commitments during <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/dec\/09\/cop28-china-says-it-would-like-agreement-on-substituting-renewables-for-fossil-fuels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:climate summit talks with other countries;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a>. As <em>Bloomberg<\/em> notes, China has been struggling to put all of its clean energy into the power grid.
