The CEO of JPMorgan Chase<\/a> has found himself yet again thrust into the spotlight under the question of a White House run\u2014this time pushed by billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman. <\/p>\n President Biden left many voters feeling uninspired following his performance in a televised debate<\/a> with former President Donald Trump this week. Biden stumbled over certain points, reportedly leading some in his party to wonder if it\u2019s time for a replacement<\/a>.<\/p>\n This is the question Ackman, founder and CEO of Pershing Square Management, has pounced upon\u2014and drawn Wall Street titan<\/a> Dimon into the conversation. <\/p>\n Posting on the Elon Musk-owned social media platform X<\/a> after the debate, <\/p>\n If the Democratic Party were smart, it would make Jamie Dimon the candidate. Jamie said he wouldn\u2019t run unless he was anointed president. This would be his anointment.<\/p>\n \u2014 Bill Ackman (@BillAckman) <\/a>June 28, 2024<\/a> <\/p>\n Dimon\u2014who was paid a record $36 million for his work at America\u2019s biggest bank in 2023<\/a>\u2014may have been taken somewhat at his word in this instance. <\/p>\n Earlier this year, per the Financial Times<\/a><\/em>, Dimon said: \u201cI\u2019ve always said I\u2019d love to be president, but you\u2019d have to anoint me, folks,\u201d prompting laughter from his audience at the Economic Club of New York.<\/p>\n Indeed, while many have thrown the Harvard Business School alumnus\u2019 metaphorical hat into the ring, Dimon has repeatedly denied his intentions for a presidential run.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve never really believed I\u2019m suited for it,\u201d he told The Economist<\/a><\/em> in July of last year. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to do that, you should practice. You don\u2019t just say \u2018Oh I\u2019m going to run for office,\u2019\u201d Dimon added. \u201cThere may be common skills between a CEO in terms of administration, management, leadership, but there\u2019s also non common ones. You\u2019re dealing with a whole bunch of different issues.\u201d<\/p>\n JPMorgan has also shut down such speculation, telling Fortune<\/em> last summer<\/a>: \u201cAs he has said in the past, Jamie has no plans to run for office. He is very happy in his current role.\u201d<\/p>\n A spokesperson for the bank declined to comment on Friday.<\/p>\n Dimon\u2019s denials have continued into this year. In an interview with Bloomberg\u2019s Emily Chang<\/a> two months ago, Dimon was asked if he was \u201csure\u201d he wasn\u2019t running for office.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure,\u201d Dimon responded. Upon hearing anecdotes of a group of ex-pats saying they would return to the nation if he sat in the Oval Office, Dimon joked back: \u201cI got four more votes.\u201d<\/p>\n While Dimon has also said \u201cmaybe one day\u201d he\u2019d serve the U.S. in \u201cone way or another,\u201d the CEO also doubled down on his intention to stay out of politics in an interview with the Wall Street Journal<\/em> in April. <\/p>\n \u201cI would not do Fed chairman, I wouldn\u2019t do Treasury Secretary\u2014I don\u2019t think I\u2019d ever be picked for that,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n Unwarranted or not, speculation about Dimon\u2019s next steps has only increased in recent months after the 68-year-old announced he would be stepping down from the top job at JPMorgan within the next five years.<\/p>\n Dimon\u2014who has earned the unofficial title from some as the \u201cKing of Wall Street\u201d\u2014changed his stance in May from the line he has stuck to for many years: that he\u2019ll consider retiring \u201cin five years\u2019 time.\u201d<\/p>\n But this spring at JPMorgan\u2019s investor day, his famous response didn\u2019t come<\/a>: \u201cThe timetable isn\u2019t five years anymore,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Street began to wonder whether Dimon would continue on as chairman of the board<\/a> with a new name in the CEO position\u2014or whether he\u2019d depart the financial behemoth entirely. <\/p>\n While the context around Dimon\u2019s occupation might have changed, the fact Ackman is backing the banker for the White House isn\u2019t a surprise. The hedge fund founder, worth approximately $8 billion according to Bloomberg\u2019s Billionaires Index<\/a>, has repeatedly and publicly endorsed Dimon for the presidency.<\/p>\n Indeed, if Dimon did decide to make a run for the White House he wouldn\u2019t be the first high-profile CEO to do so. Former Starbucks<\/a> CEO Howard Schultz, for example, was considering an independent campaign but ultimately decided against it<\/a>. Likewise Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief and chairman of the media company after his name, is a former presidential candidate. <\/p>\n Ackman\u2019s assumption that Dimon would even run for the Biden-led party is also shaky, with the latter describing himself<\/a> as \u201cbarely a Democrat\u201d in previous interviews. <\/p>\n One thing\u2019s for sure, the man worth $2.2 billion according to Forbes<\/em><\/a> has strong opinions about the place of America\u2019s leadership on the global stage. After all, he believes, it\u2019s \u201cthe most important thing for the world in the next 100 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\nChange of circumstances<\/h2>\n
