After donating more than $39 billion over the span of 15 years, Warren Buffett warned his support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation may end with him.<\/p>\n
In an interview<\/a> with the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em>, the 93-year-old philanthropist said his will<\/a> did not foresee further explicit pledges of charity to the organization once he was gone. Up until now there was no concrete indication one way or the other what might happen with his fortune in the event of his passing.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Gates Foundation has no money coming after my death,\u201d said Buffett, whose longtime business partner at Berkshire Hathaway<\/a>, Charlie Munger, passed away at the age of 99 late last year.<\/p>\n Buffett explained all of his remaining wealth\u2014currently worth around $127 billion\u2014that he has not given away by then will be bequeathed to a charitable trust overseen by his three children: Howard, Susie, and Peter.\u00a0<\/p>\n While this does not in and of itself preclude the eventuality of future donations to the Gates Fund, Buffett said they will have to decide unanimously how his billions will be spent once he\u2019s gone.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI feel very, very good about the values of my three children,\u201d he told the Journal<\/em>, \u201cand I have 100% trust in how they will carry things out.\u201d<\/p>\n Buffett, whose will<\/a> becomes public upon his death, first\u00a0sketched out a plan<\/a> for what would become of his wealth in November, naming the three as executors and trustees.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThey were not fully prepared for this awesome responsibility in 2006, but they are now,\u201d he said at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n Speaking to the paper, his daughter and two sons said they had not yet made concrete plans for how the money would be spent, not only because it depended on tax laws and developments in society but also because it was premature.<\/p>\n \u201cI can imagine it will be probably some continuation of what we\u2019ve been doing,\u201d Susie Buffett said.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Gates Foundation did not respond to a request from\u00a0Fortune<\/em>\u00a0for a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n Run by CEO Mark Suzman, the charity has disbursed grants totalling almost $78 billion since it was founded. Among its causes has been combating poverty around the world and the eradication of malaria, a disease that claims\u00a0over 600,000 deaths<\/a>\u00a0every year.<\/p>\n One of the foundation\u2019s most generous supporters, Buffett donated over to the foundation since 2006, when he joined as trustee. Buffett stepped down in 2021, the same year when Melinda French Gates announced her intention to divorce<\/a> the Microsoft<\/a> co-founder.<\/p>\n On Friday, Berkshire Hathaway said in a statement the Omaha, Nebraska-native would donate<\/a> a further 9.9 million shares in its class B stock worth a total of $4 billion to the foundation effective Friday.<\/p>\n The news is the second recent blow<\/a> to Suzman and the Foundation, after Melinda French Gates resigned<\/a> in May in order to devote herself to the fight against the rollback of women\u2019s rights in the U.S. and around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWarren Buffett has been exceedingly generous to the Gates Foundation through more than 18 years of contributions and advice,\u201d Suzman told the Journal<\/em>. \u201cHe has played an invaluable role in championing and shaping the foundation\u2019s work to create a world where every person can live a healthy, productive life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\nSecond recent blow to the Gates Foundation<\/h2>\n
