In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C8qJWw-AVe_\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=3b262bcd-4a17-45af-85c6-45cb193bfef4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">Instagram<\/a> post, the author penned a heartfelt tribute to the film star, calling Alzheimer\u2019s a \u201ccruel disease\u201d while sharing a photo of Gena, 94, from the film set.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-3\">\u201cAlzheimer\u2019s is such a cruel disease,\u201d Nicholas captioned his Instagram post on Wednesday, June 26. \u201cOn days like today, I\u2019m reminded of Gena\u2019s powerful portrayal of Allie and the depth she brought to the character. It\u2019s revealed in the movie that Allie eventually lost her memory and could not remember her and her husband Noah Calhoun\u2019s love story. The younger version of Noah is played by <a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/ryan-gosling\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><strong>Ryan Gosling<\/strong>,<\/a> while the older version is played by <strong>James Garner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-7\">Alzheimer\u2019s Disease is one of the most common forms of dementia in patients. Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/alzheimers-causes-and-risk-factors\/what-causes-alzheimers-disease#:~:text=The%20causes%20probably%20include%20a,differ%20from%20person%20to%20person.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">National Institute on Aging<\/a>, scientists have not yet discovered what causes the illness, but the number of those diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s doubles every five years after the age of 65.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\"><em>The Notebook<\/em> director <strong>Nick Cassavetes<\/strong> is Gena\u2019s son, and he recently revealed his mother\u2019s diagnosis during an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/the-notebook-star-gena-rowlands-has-alzheimers-8668642\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><em>Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">\u201cI got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer\u2019s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she\u2019s had Alzheimer\u2019s,\u201d the director told the publication in an interview that was published on Tuesday, June 25. \u201cShe\u2019s in full dementia. And it\u2019s so crazy \u2014 we lived it, she acted it, and now it\u2019s on us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\">Despite her diagnosis, Gena established herself as a hard-working and dedicated actress. With a film career that has spanned decades, Gena was determined to give a heart-wrenching performance on screen.
