Jeans are low-rise and phones are low-tech, and Hilton thinks it\u2019s a fad that is born of trying to break out of the mold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlip phones are making a comeback right now because people wanna flip the script, do something different,\u201d the famous former carrier of an iconic pink Razr told <em>Fortune<\/em> at an event hosted by Motorola. Of course, Hilton\u2019s sign-off happened at Motorola\u2019s event as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/motorola-razr-and-razr-plus-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/motorola-razr-and-razr-plus-2024\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">phone company<\/a> unveiled a new model of flip phone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trend cycles come in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/bvmkm8\/how-the-20-year-trend-cycle-collapsed\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/bvmkm8\/how-the-20-year-trend-cycle-collapsed\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">blink of an eye<\/a> these days, as fueled by fast fashion and an extremely online era. Growing up on the internet, Gen Zers have started to look for guardrails as anecdotes of many young adults using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/dannicaramirez\/gen-z-do-not-disturb-anxiety\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/dannicaramirez\/gen-z-do-not-disturb-anxiety\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Do Not Disturb function<\/a> as a way of detaching from their phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a small trend,\u201d Lars Silberbauer, chief marketing officer of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nokia\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nokia\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">Nokia<\/a> Mobile and HMD Global, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/gen-z-flip-phones-might-be-onto-something-c4744796\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/gen-z-flip-phones-might-be-onto-something-c4744796\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> in 2023. In November of said year, Arite Beaty wrote for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/motorolas-new-699-flip-phone-made-me-a-little-less-excited-for-samsung-unpacked\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/motorolas-new-699-flip-phone-made-me-a-little-less-excited-for-samsung-unpacked\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">ZDNet<\/a> that internet searches for flip phones increased by \u201c15,369% over the past year among Gen Z and younger millennials.\u201d And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/06\/technology\/smartphone-addiction-flip-phone.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/06\/technology\/smartphone-addiction-flip-phone.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">adults of all ages<\/a> are using flip phones when they feel like they\u2019re spending too much time online, citing feelings of boredom or fatigue. Perhaps people are reacting to the ubiquitousness of the tech world as the new wave of AI is hurried in, creating their own back-to-the-future phenomenon as they search for something familiar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nostalgic,\u201d Hilton says of the phone, bringing up an emotion that is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/25\/welchs-juice-vodka-can-alcohol\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/25\/welchs-juice-vodka-can-alcohol\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">especially prevalent<\/a> during times of socioeconomic turmoil as people long for something comfortable and familiar. And Harlow adds that even people born after the 1990s long for the era: 37% are nostalgic for that decade.
