Simply put, they were carrying bacteria that can cause harmful infections in the bloodstream, bones, joints, and GI tract.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven at relatively low numbers these pathogens are of public health significance,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/biology.fau.edu\/directory\/esiobu\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/biology.fau.edu\/directory\/esiobu\/index.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Nwadiuto Esiobu<\/a>, PhD., senior author and a professor of biological sciences in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at Florida Atlantic University, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fau.edu\/newsdesk\/articles\/wristband-bacteria-study\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.fau.edu\/newsdesk\/articles\/wristband-bacteria-study\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">press release<\/a> about the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quantity and taxonomy of bacteria we found on the wristbands show that there is a need for regular sanitation of these surfaces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers tested plastic, rubber, cloth, leather, and metal wristbands to see the correlation between the material and the amount of bacteria present. Bacteria tended to cling to rubber and plastic bands the most, with little to no bacteria present on bands made of gold or silver, according to the study.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to help prevent infections from fitness trackers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You can reduce your exposure to bacteria with simple cleaning measures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clean the band with common household disinfectants regularly<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The study found that Lysol disinfectant spray, 70% ethyl alcohol, and apple cider vinegar proved to be at least somewhat effective on all fitness tracker band materials. <\/p>\n<p>Lysol and ethanol killed 99.99% of E. coli, Staph aureus and P. aeruginosa after 30 seconds of contact on most bands, though needed two minutes of contact for plastic bands. However, apple cider vinegar wasn\u2019t effective on Staph aureus, even after five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that for the bacteria identified, the recommended usage time for Lysol Disinfectant Spray is five minutes, where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/infection-control\/hcp\/disinfection-sterilization\/chemical-disinfectants.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/infection-control\/hcp\/disinfection-sterilization\/chemical-disinfectants.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">finds<\/a> that 70% ethanol is effective against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and S. aureus after 10 seconds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Follow the manufacturer\u2019s instructions for cleaning the hardware<\/strong> <\/h3>\n<p>Companies like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.garmin.com\/en-US\/watch-fit-and-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.garmin.com\/en-US\/watch-fit-and-care\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\"> Garmin<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/108893\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/108893\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\"> Apple<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbit.com\/global\/us\/product-care\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.fitbit.com\/global\/us\/product-care\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\"> Fitbit<\/a> list their specific cleaning and care recommendations on their sites.
