{"id":236147,"date":"2024-06-25T12:17:28","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T12:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/25\/ai-music-generators-suno-and-udio-are-being-sued-by-major-us-record-labels\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:16:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:16:14","slug":"ai-music-generators-suno-and-udio-are-being-sued-by-major-us-record-labels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/25\/ai-music-generators-suno-and-udio-are-being-sued-by-major-us-record-labels\/","title":{"rendered":"AI music generators Suno and Udio are being sued by major US record labels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/aimusic-900x506.webp\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The music industry, including major record labels Sony Music and Universal Music Group, have declared their intent toward artificial intelligence companies Suno and Udio, suing them for mass copyright infringement.<\/p>\n<p>The AI music generators have been accused of using the labels\u2019 recordings to train their systems to create content <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that will \u201cdirectly compete with, cheapen, and ultimately drown out\u201d human artists\u2019 work, according to federal lawsuits filed in New York against Udio, and served on Suno in Massachusetts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under the umbrella of the Recording Industry Association of America, the plaintiffs are seeking up to $150,000 per piece of work infringed.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riaa.com\/record-companies-bring-landmark-cases-for-responsible-ai-againstsuno-and-udio-in-boston-and-new-york-federal-courts-respectively\/\">press release<\/a> from the industry collective stated, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cUnlicensed services like Suno and Udio that claim it\u2019s \u2018fair\u2019 to copy an artist\u2019s life\u2019s work and exploit it for their own profit without consent or pay set back the promise of genuinely innovative AI for us all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It continued, \u201cThese are straightforward cases of copyright infringement involving unlicensed copying of sound recordings on a massive scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Strongly refuted claims<\/h2>\n<p>The music generators have not publicly disclosed exactly what their systems were trained on but in response, Suno CEO Mikey Shulman said in a statement, \u201cOur technology is transformative, it is designed to generate completely new outputs, not to memorize and regurgitate pre-existing content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Udio has not provided an immediate response to requests for a comment on the action against them.<\/p>\n<p>The claims that there is no direct correlation between the AI-generated content and existing music, have been strongly refuted.
