Replacing Anthony Fauci, whose tenure during the covid-19 pandemic made him a household name, the stakes have never been higher for the agency\u2019s newest boss.<\/p>\n<p>Having spent decades working across HIV prevention and sexually transmitted diseases, as well as overseeing therapeutic interventions for covid-19, Marrazzo is now in charge of NIAID\u2019s $6.6 billion annual budget \u2013 and the future of the US response to infectious disease.<\/p>\n<p>That involves working with the institute\u2019s 21 laboratories across the country, leading the fight against ebola and HIV and spearheading efforts to develop new vaccines, therapies, diagnostics and technologies.<\/p>\n<p>At the top of Marrazzo\u2019s to-do list is tackling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2305266-antibiotic-resistance-killed-more-people-than-malaria-or-aids-in-2019\/\">antimicrobial resistance (AMR)<\/a>, or drug-resistant superbugs, which are predicted to cause 10 million deaths per year by 2050 at an annual cost of $1 trillion to the global economy. In May, the UK\u2019s former chief medical officer warned that the rise of these pathogens could make the pandemic look \u201cminor\u201d and that the issue is more acute than climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Our warming world is partly responsible for increasing rates of AMR, with shifting climate conditions around the globe helping bacteria such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2199208-salmonella-can-hijack-immune-cells-to-spread-around-the-body\/\"><i>Salmonella<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2100371-warming-seas-linked-to-rise-in-cholera-bacteria-in-europe-and-us\/\">cholera-causing<\/a> <i>Vibrio<\/i> to survive \u2013 and evade our current antibiotic weaponry completely.
