Daria Rose was interning at Ray Dalio\u2019s Bridgwater Associates<\/a> when her friend threw a plastic water bottle into a regular trash can instead of the recycling bin. The friend got a ping on her report card: someone had witnessed the action and marked her down.<\/p>\n Rose, a Harvard graduate, interned twice at the hedge fund giant in 2017 and 2018<\/a> and described the experience as akin to a \u2018Black Mirror\u2019 episode. <\/p>\n She revealed that the Dalio-founded firm operates a real-time dot system, with colleagues encouraged to rank each other on a daily basis for qualities like humility, assertiveness, composure, and more. If someone didn\u2019t like how you behaved in a meeting, you got a negative red dot\u2014if they liked your approach, a green dot would appear on your report card.<\/p>\n Rose added that the amalgamation of dots then went onto individual reports, which were named \u2018baseball cards.\u2019 This would give individuals and their managers an overview of how the individual was performing and any areas for improvement.<\/p>\n On top of that, the iPad-wielding staff also had a \u2018pain button\u2019 on their screens, Rose explained, meaning any time they experienced discomfort, they could report the situation and write a reflection about how it could be improved in the future.<\/p>\n If the set-up sounds familiar, look no further than Netflix<\/a>. <\/p>\n In 2016, a \u2018Black Mirror\u2019<\/em> episode named \u2018Nosedive\u2019<\/em> followed the story of a woman navigating a world of constant ratings. <\/p>\n Positive interaction with anyone\u2014barista, colleague, taxi driver\u2014resulted in a positive score, while negative responses lowered your overall rating (and therefore value).<\/p>\n Yet, while the ranking method might seem somewhat dystopian, Rose wrote in an essay for Business Insider<\/em><\/a> that the system massively helped her performance. <\/p>\n Indeed, Rose loved the experience so much that if the student hadn\u2019t gone to law school, she would have taken a permanent role with the organization, which has $124 billion in assets under management (per Forbes).<\/p>\n Rose said: \u201cIn each meeting, we\u2019d each have an iPad in front of us, showing a list of everyone else present. Throughout the meeting, we\u2019d\u00a0give people dots\u00a0for things like humility, composure, willingness to touch a nerve, openmindedness, and assertiveness. By the end of the meeting, our whole screen would\u00a0just be filled with dots\u2014some red, some green. It could get distracting sometimes\u2014like:\u00a0\u2018Who gave me a three?\u2019\u2014but we\u2019d try to ignore it and stay in the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the distraction Rose, who went on to appear on the 26th season of \u2018The Bachelor\u2019<\/em>, said the system actually made meetings more efficient. <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cBecause we were\u00a0constantly being evaluated\u00a0on what we said, people were way more conscious when speaking<\/a>,\u201d she explained. \u201cInstead of talking just to talk, people tried to make their points succinct and easily understandable, or they\u2019d get a negative dot. This criticism wasn\u2019t just limited to peers or supervisees. We were also encouraged to give dots to our bosses<\/a>, managers, and even CEOs.\u201d<\/p>\n While the setup might have been uncomfortable for staffers getting to grips with the system, it could go some way toward reducing the so-called \u2018meeting madness\u2019 sweeping corporate America. <\/p>\n Studies have shown that over 70% of senior managers<\/a> think meetings are unproductive and inefficient, with 92% of employees<\/a> saying meetings are costly and a waste of time.<\/p>\n \u201cWith the dot system at Bridgewater, if there was an issue, we\u2019d know that day, and it\u2019d be diagnosed that week,\u201d Rose adds. \u201cI miss that part about it.\u201d<\/p>\n While Rose was aware that she was constantly being evaluated by her peers, it wasn\u2019t until her friend was marked down for not recycling properly that she appreciated how closely they were being watched.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know who saw her, but someone gave her a negative dot,\u201d Rose recalled. \u201cIt made me realize: \u2018Wow, people really do care on a microscopic level and they\u2019re paying attention to you.’\u201d<\/p>\n Bridgewater did not immediately respond to Fortune\u2019s<\/em> request for comment.<\/p>\n\nRating system was a hit for former intern<\/h2>\n
