{"id":235287,"date":"2024-06-22T06:46:57","date_gmt":"2024-06-22T06:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/22\/new-york-signs-laws-to-protect-kids-on-social-media-but-faces-criticism\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:16:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:16:27","slug":"new-york-signs-laws-to-protect-kids-on-social-media-but-faces-criticism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/22\/new-york-signs-laws-to-protect-kids-on-social-media-but-faces-criticism\/","title":{"rendered":"New York signs laws to protect kids on social media, but faces criticism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/protect-children-and-teenagers-online-900x633.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The New York Governor signed two new bills into law on Thursday (June 20) to protect children and teenagers from the harmful side of social media.<\/p>\n<p>The Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act is one of the bills that will come into force and this will stop social media platforms from \u201cproviding an addictive feed\u201d to children younger than 18 without parental consent.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose is to \u201cprotect the <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/us-surgeon-general-makes-case-for-health-warnings-on-social-media-apps\/\">mental health of children<\/a>\u201d and prevent disrupted sleep due to night-time use of <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/tiktok-denies-reports-it-is-creating-a-us-only-algorithm\/\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The other is the New York Child Data Protection Act which limits data collection from minors without consent and restricts the sale of the information.<\/p>\n<p>While states across the US are making moves to enact legislation to protect children in the rise of social media, the federal government is lagging behind.<\/p>\n<p>Some proposals have been introduced like the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) but federal legislators need more floor votes before they can focus on these measures properly.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the signing, New York Governor Kathy Hochul was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/6\/20\/24182396\/new-york-governor-social-media-law-parental-consent-algorithms\">reported as saying<\/a>: \u201cAnybody going to hold their breath waiting for a federal solution?
