The new Basic tier includes the music and podcast content you get from Premium but without <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/spotify-subscribers-in-the-us-now-get-15-hours-of-audiobooks-every-month-192000398.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:15 hours of audiobook access;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">15 hours of audiobook access<\/a>, a recently added feature we suspect many subscribers don\u2019t care about anyway. Spotify said earlier this month it would <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/spotify-is-raising-the-cost-of-premium-subscriptions-again-123058485.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:hike Premium prices;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">hike Premium prices<\/a> to $12 per month, beginning in July.<\/p>\n<p>The Basic plan echoes one it <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/sign-spotify-basic-plan-save-140536525.html?guccounter=2\" data-ylk=\"slk:rolled out;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\">rolled out<\/a> in the UK last month. That one costs \u00a311 per month compared to \u00a312 for Premium with audiobook content.<\/p>\n<p>Some have suspected Spotify\u2019s audiobook push has nefarious motives. Earlier this month, the National Music Publishers\u2019 Association <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/music-publishers-accuse-spotify-of-bait-and-switch-subscription-scheme-235255614.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate<\/a> the move, going as far as calling the company\u2019s audiobook integration \u201ca scheme to increase profits by deceiving consumers and cheating the music royalty system.\u201d The NMPA complaint claims Spotify will pay about $150 million less in music royalties over the next year because of its audiobook fusion. Spotify told Engadget it did nothing wrong and rejected the accusations.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify has been penny-pinching in other areas. It was reported last year that the company <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/spotify-looks-set-to-overhaul-its-royalty-model-next-year-081722667.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:planned to overhaul its royalty model;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">planned to overhaul its royalty model<\/a>. One alleged part of that plan was to demonetize tracks earning less than five cents per month, pushing out some indie artists without established audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify also <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/spotify-is-laying-off-1500-employees-081521615.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:laid off around 9,000 employees;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">laid off around 9,000 employees<\/a> late last year, citing \u201cthe gap between our financial goal state and our current operational costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can switch to the audiobook-free tier (which is now live) by navigating to <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/spotify.com\/account\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:your account page;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">your account page<\/a>, then \u201cManage your plan\u201d and \u201cChange plan\u201d and picking Basic.
