{"id":234767,"date":"2024-06-21T00:55:32","date_gmt":"2024-06-21T00:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/21\/almost-half-of-u-s-dell-employees-would-rather-work-from-home-than-get-promoted\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:16:33","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:16:33","slug":"almost-half-of-u-s-dell-employees-would-rather-work-from-home-than-get-promoted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/21\/almost-half-of-u-s-dell-employees-would-rather-work-from-home-than-get-promoted\/","title":{"rendered":"Almost half of U.S. Dell employees would rather work from home than get promoted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GettyImages-1300311961-e1718919331836.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even months after tech company <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/dell-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/dell-technologies\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">Dell<\/a> pushed its strict return-to-office policy barring fully remote employees from promotions, its workers still refuse to come back to in-person work.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Almost 50% of Dell\u2019s full-time U.S. workforce and one-third of international employees have continued to work remotely, according to internal data from the company, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/20\/dell-employees-work-from-home-return-office-promotion\/mailto:Media.Relations@Dell.com\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to mailto:Media.Relations@Dell.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">Business<em> <\/em>Insider reported<\/a>. Unless these employees return to the office or Dell changes its remote work policy, they will not move up the ladder.<\/p>\n<p>Remote workers were willing to defy company policy because the perks of staying at home simply outweighed what they believed working in person had to offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more time I have to spend in the office, the less time, money, and personal space I have for all of that,\u201d an employee told Insider. \u201cI can do my job just as well from home and have all of those personal benefits as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other employees found that returning to in-person work simply wasn\u2019t practical given the nature of their job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy team is spread out around the world. Almost 90% of the team did the same, as in our case there was no real advantage going to the office,\u201d another employee said.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple Dell employees told Insider<em> <\/em>they work with team members in different time zones and held meetings requiring them to be on the clock at times when being on-site wouldn\u2019t be appropriate. Others said they lived too far away from a company location or that a Dell office near them had recently been shut down.<\/p>\n<p>Dell did not immediately respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s request for comment, but told Insider it believes \u201cin-person connections paired with a flexible approach are critical to drive innovation and value differentiation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Its <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/18\/dell-remote-workers-promotion-hybrid-return-to-office\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/18\/dell-remote-workers-promotion-hybrid-return-to-office\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">RTO policy rolled out in March<\/a> certainly reflects this. The policy reclassified employees into remote and hybrid workers, with those in the latter category required to work in person for at least 30 days per quarter, about three days a week. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dell.com\/en-uk\/blog\/the-future-of-work-a-journey-to-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.dell.com\/en-uk\/blog\/the-future-of-work-a-journey-to-2022\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">2022 blog post<\/a>, the company set a goal for 60% of its workforce to be remote at any given time.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Dell <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/16\/dell-hybrid-employees-who-dont-show-up-to-the-office-enough-are-getting-a-literal-red-flag\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/16\/dell-hybrid-employees-who-dont-show-up-to-the-office-enough-are-getting-a-literal-red-flag\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">cracked down<\/a> on enforcement, instituting additional means of tracking employees\u2019 office attendance. The tech company began keeping track of how often employees swiped their electronic key card and their VPN usage to see which staffers were really showing up three days a week. Those who were received blue flags, and employees who showed up less frequently received green and yellow flags, with never-seen employees getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/dell-hybrid-return-to-office-mandate-monitor-employees-onsite-attendance-2024-5#:~:text=Yellow%20flags%20reflect%20%22some%20onsite,and%20compensation%2C%20Dell%20told%20employees.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/dell-hybrid-return-to-office-mandate-monitor-employees-onsite-attendance-2024-5#:~:text=Yellow%20flags%20reflect%20%22some%20onsite,and%20compensation%2C%20Dell%20told%20employees.\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">literal red flags<\/a> from the company.<\/p>\n<p>But time and again, remote employees have shown their disdain for policies like these: After software company <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/sap\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/sap\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP<\/a> began enforcing its RTO rules in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/01\/31\/sap-remote-work-return-to-office-5000-employees-letter-betrayed-3-day-policy\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/01\/31\/sap-remote-work-return-to-office-5000-employees-letter-betrayed-3-day-policy\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">5,000 employees signed a letter<\/a> to company executives in a remote-work rebellion, saying they felt \u201cbetrayed\u201d by the policy. An <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/23\/office-workers-remote-work-over-money-quit-jobs\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/23\/office-workers-remote-work-over-money-quit-jobs\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">October 2023 survey<\/a> by FlexJobs found that among 8,400 U.S. workers, 17% of employees would sacrifice up to 20% of their pay if it meant being able to work remotely. Over half of respondents said they knew someone planning to quit their job because of an unwanted RTO mandate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLack of remote work options is a significant reason why people leave their jobs,\u201d FlexJobs career expert Keith Spencer wrote in the report.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to quell the remote-work rebellion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite the ire over inflexible RTO policies, Dell\u2019s own strict set of rules follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/16\/remote-workers-receive-fewer-promotions-office-colleagues-no-difference-hybrid-working-always-in-person-nber-study\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/16\/remote-workers-receive-fewer-promotions-office-colleagues-no-difference-hybrid-working-always-in-person-nber-study\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">trend in companies<\/a> favoring hybrid and in-person employees, particularly when it comes to promotion. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningbrew.com\/daily\/stories\/fully-remote-workers-are-missing-out-on-promotions\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.morningbrew.com\/daily\/stories\/fully-remote-workers-are-missing-out-on-promotions\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">January report<\/a> from employment data platform Live Data Technologies, companies have maintained their position when it comes to rewarding in-person employees.<\/p>\n<p>Of 2 million white-collar workers, 5.6% of hybrid and in-person staff received promotions at work last year, compared with 3.9% of remote workers. Ninety percent of CEOs surveyed said they\u2019d favor employees who came into the office for a raise or favorable assignment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople may not like it, but I can\u2019t build a company by playing to the lowest common denominator,\u201d Vineet Jain, CEO of software company Egnyte, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/lifestyle\/careers\/remote-workers-are-losing-out-on-promotions-8219ec63\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/lifestyle\/careers\/remote-workers-are-losing-out-on-promotions-8219ec63\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">told the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIf you don\u2019t show up and work with the rest of your colleagues, it\u2019s showing a lack of connectivity and a lack of ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Stanford economist Nick Bloom <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/18\/stanford-nick-bloom-hybrid-work-cuts-attrition-no-negative-impact-promoted\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/18\/stanford-nick-bloom-hybrid-work-cuts-attrition-no-negative-impact-promoted\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">isn\u2019t buying the strategy<\/a> of strict RTO policies and found that hybrid work in particular has its benefits in the workplace ecosystem. According to a study he authored published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07500-2#Abs1\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07500-2#Abs1\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\">in <em>Nature<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>this month, employees who worked from home twice a week reported greater job satisfaction and had reduced turnover compared with fully in-person employees. In fact these flexible arrangements slightly improved productivity among a group of 1,612 employees at a Chinese technology company from 2021\u201322.
