Hollywood is mourning the death of Emmy and Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland<\/strong>. The actor died Thursday, June 20, in Miami after a long illness, CAA confirmed to Variety<\/i><\/a>. He was 88.<\/p>\n

Donald\u2019s son Kiefer Sutherland<\/strong><\/a> also confirmed the news in a social media post. \u201cWith a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,\u201d\u00a0 he wrote via X<\/a> on Thursday. \u201cI personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.\u201d<\/p>\n

As part of his post, Kiefer included a throwback photo of himself as a child hanging out with his dad.<\/p>\n

For nearly 60 years, the Canadian-born actor found success on the big and small screen. His on-screen credits include M*A*S*H<\/em>, Pride & Prejudice<\/em>, Klute <\/em>and The Hunger Games<\/em> film series where he played President Snow.<\/p>\n

Most recently, he appeared as Judge Parker on the series Lawmen: Bass Reeves<\/em> and in the Swimming With Sharks<\/em> series in 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have incredible respect for my father\u2019s work,\u201d Keifer told The Canadian Press<\/a><\/em> in 2016 when praising his dad. \u201cI believe he\u2019s not only one of the most prolific, but I think he\u2019s one of the great important actors in the English language.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, the father-son duo had the opportunity to share the same screen together in the 2015 western film Forsaken<\/em>. \u201cI was nervous,\u201d Keifer previously said about the opportunity. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I\u2019ve wanted to do since I started work.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Kiefer was growing up, he was raised by his mother, Shirley Douglas<\/strong>. In an interview with PEOPLE<\/a><\/em>, he explained that he couldn\u2019t watch many of his dad\u2019s previous movies because they were rated R. It wasn\u2019t until he turned 18 when Kiefer discovered his dad\u2019s true skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember feeling really bad as a son that I wasn\u2019t aware of not only how prolific my father was as an actor but what he had really contributed to the art of cinema,\u201d he told the publication in 2016.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, he got to witness his father be recognized for his career including the moment Donald received the 2017 Honorary Oscar award from the Academy\u2019s Board of Governors.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
