Las Vegas (\u201cthe meadows\u201d in Spanish) traces its name to a Mexican explorer who passed through the area in 1829 and found dense grasslands fed by freshwater springs. Founded on May 15, 1905, the city grew steadily in the following two decades. Unofficially known as \u201cThe Entertainment Capital of the World,\u201d a key component of the city\u2019s allure is its wide range of architecture, including The Strat, a complex with a 1,149-foot-tall observation tower.
