Do it one too many times and there\u2019s a high chance it\u2019ll result in you receiving their resignation notice\u2014especially if they\u2019re a millennial. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>That\u2019s according to Reed, at least. The recruitment platform surveyed around 2,000 workers and found that even just one after-hours call-out is enough to put some millennial workers off their jobs for good.<\/p>\n<p>Reed\u2019s research revealed that over 60% of 35-to-44-year-olds in the U.K. would consider quitting over being asked to work on weekends. While the majority admitted that they\u2019d only think about tossing the towel in if it became a regular occurrence, a quarter would do so if <em>ever<\/em> contacted outside of their working hours.<\/p>\n<p>The youngest group of workers, 18-to-34-year-olds, are not far behind: 59% would be willing to move on to new pastures to protect their work-life balance, with 22% insisting that just one out-of-hours call from the boss is one too many.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, around 40% of those over 55 years old would consider quitting over out-of-hours contact, with 30% only doing so if it was a regular occurrence and 10% being put off their employer even if it was a one-off.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Big bucks and peanuts<\/h2>\n<p>Only a small select group of professionals are willing to be always on: Those who earn the big bucks and those making peanuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The very top earners in Britain banking over \u00a3100,000 ($126,990) and the lowest earners on less than \u00a310,000 ($12,699) were the least likely to quit over regularly being contacted outside normal business hours (28%).<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, one too many weekend calls from the boss would trigger over half of workers earning between \u00a380,000 to \u00a399,999 ($101,592 to $126,989) annually to consider handing in their resignation letter.<\/p>\n<p>Excluding those in six-figure jobs, workers\u2019 willingness to quit their jobs over weekend callouts generally declines as pay does.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CEOs rarely switch off<\/h2>\n<p>Nobody likes to work on their time off, but for those in CEO roles, it\u2019s often part of the parcel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The founder and CEO of Farmer J, a popular healthy fast-food chain in London, told <em>Fortune<\/em> that he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/06\/farmer-j-jonathan-recanati-work-life-balance\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/06\/farmer-j-jonathan-recanati-work-life-balance\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">never turned his out-of-office on<\/a>\u2014even during his honeymoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I switch off, I\u2019m basically not pursuing my goals,\u201d Jonathan Recanati said. \u201cBut if you enjoy doing it, it doesn\u2019t feel like work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anna Lundstrom, CEO of Nespresso\u2019s U.K. and Ireland business, echoed to <em>Fortune<\/em> that she can be reached by her workforce on various platforms at any given moment, from Teams and email to WhatsApp and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/linkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/linkedin\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Lundstrom\u2019s eyes, being always available keeps her abreast of trends, her team, and the competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/08\/05\/anna-lundstrom-nespresso-uk-ceo-aim-work-life-fluidity-daily-routine\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/08\/05\/anna-lundstrom-nespresso-uk-ceo-aim-work-life-fluidity-daily-routine\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">I think I\u2019d always rather know something than not<\/a>,\u201d she explained, adding that her phone is always within reach from the moment she wakes up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would hate to miss something, to not be aware of something or to be tone deaf, you know? Somebody will notice that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plus, if young workers want to keep their current freedoms, like working from home, then their bosses will likely expect them to be contactable from home\u2014whether or not it\u2019s during working hours.<\/p>\n<p>At least that\u2019s what <em>Shark Tank<\/em> investor Kevin O\u2019Leary suggested when he noted the tradeoff for remote workers is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/03\/03\/remote-work-kevin-oleary-new-generation-worker-never-worked-office-transforming-management\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/03\/03\/remote-work-kevin-oleary-new-generation-worker-never-worked-office-transforming-management\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 pUpMT\" rel=\"noopener\">less private time on weekends<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said he feels free to call his employees at any time on any day of the week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the deal.
