Ditto is a Pokemon<\/a> known for its ability to mimic other Pokemon and even humans \u2013 in a way that breaks the laws of physics.<\/p>\n The impossibility of Ditto\u2019s powers (looking past the fact that it\u2019s a fictional pink blob) has caused physicists on the Pokemon subreddit<\/a> to investigate, seeking some way to make Ditto\u2019s powers actually work according to our laws of science (which wasn\u2019t an issue in this case of Pokemon weirdness<\/a>). There are hundreds of responses attempting to explain how Ditto\u2019s unique ability could actually be achieved.<\/p>\n The discussion starts with a breakdown of the law of conservation of mass, with one user asking how Ditto, a 4kg lump of slime with a face, can spontaneously become a 400kg Steelix. Just where does the mass come from?<\/p>\n \u201cDitto\u2019s HP stays the same, it\u2019s not changing mass,\u201d reasons one redditor. \u201cIt\u2019s imitating the opponent.\u201d<\/p>\n However, another argues back: \u201cDitto\u2019s weight DOES change though. It needs to change weight for weight-based moves such as Low Kick, Grass Knot, and Heavy Slam. Thus it is changing mass.\u201d<\/p>\n Yet another hypothesis states that PP (Power Points) which Pokemon need to perform attacks, could hold the answer to the question.<\/p>\n \u201cPP is a form of stored energy that the Pokemon\u2019s biological processes are capable of using to fuel various effects,\u201d reasoned a Pokemon physicist (an unofficial title). \u201cThat\u2019s where the extra mass comes from. It\u2019s converted directly from PP. That\u2019s also where a water Pokemon\u2019s oceanic supply of liquid artillery comes from.\u201d<\/p>\n While this checks out, it would require an unheard-of amount of energy in order to convert it into matter. Sadly, it seems that Ditto just wouldn\u2019t function in the real world \u2014 although one element of Pokemon has made it into the real world<\/a>.<\/p>\nDoes Ditto actually change mass?<\/h2>\n
