The activity was estimated to be worth almost $20 billion, roughly 1.5% of GDP, according to government data.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are waging a universal war against online gambling,\u201d Minister Budi told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/indonesia-vows-crack-down-blood-sucking-online-gambling-2024-06-14\/\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOnline gambling is so concerning, it\u2019s sucking the people\u2019s blood dry,\u201d he said, adding that the affliction is not just impacting family finances, but having a detrimental effect on other domestic concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is a phenomenon that\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>President Joko Widodo was also prominent in the crackdown against betting activity, as he took to various social media platforms to headline the campaign.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDon\u2019t gamble, both offline and online. It\u2019s better if you have good fortune, you have money, you save it or use it as business capital,\u201d he implored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Widodo, who will make way for<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0president-elect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prabowo Subianto<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in October, urged <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all public figures, religious leaders, and the public to \u201cmonitor each other, and also report if there are any indications of online gambling\u201d, while conceding it was difficult to eradicate gambling due to its \u201ccross-border nature\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"in\" dir=\"ltr\">Judi itu menghancurkan moral &amp; merusak generasi muda kita, baik judi offline maupun online. In another case, a military officer is said to have taken his own life due to significant debts racked up due to betting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In recent days, an army official in south Sulawesi confessed to embezzling 876 million rupiah (53,200 USD) of his unit\u2019s funds to put toward his online gambling activity. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agus Subiyanto, commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, has committed to \u201ctake firm action\u201d against any personnel involved in online gambling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian government has established a multi-agency task force, in partnership with Interpol, to strengthen its defense against online gambling.
