And then it dawned on him why: They\u2019d met in a running group.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cRunning is a great equalizer. It is a place where people find common ground, face similar challenges, overcome similar obstacles, and achieve personal milestones,\u201d DeMatoff, the owner of a Chicago interior accent design and manufacturing company, tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cWhen meeting runners and running together, age doesn\u2019t even enter the equation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a valuable lesson he\u2019s learned through his involvement in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cararuns.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cararuns.org\/about\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">Chicago Area Runners Association<\/a> (CARA), a group he has been involved with since he decided to run his first marathon in 1995. Now he\u2019s the vice president, and believes strongly that running, when done with others, can be a particularly salient\u2014if surprising\u2014antidote to the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/founder-toms-shoes-mens-retreat-loneliness-depression\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/founder-toms-shoes-mens-retreat-loneliness-depression\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">loneliness<\/a> epidemic, currently affecting nearly 1 in 2 people in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Because while running is by definition a solo activity, it can also be done with others\u2014which in turn brings layer upon layer of physical and mental health benefits.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it\u2019s needed<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/daily-habits-prevent-loneliness-burnout-surgeon-general\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/daily-habits-prevent-loneliness-burnout-surgeon-general\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy<\/a> called<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/11\/15\/global-initiative-loneliness-epidemic-vivek-murthy-surgeon-general-world-health-organization\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/11\/15\/global-initiative-loneliness-epidemic-vivek-murthy-surgeon-general-world-health-organization\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\"> loneliness an \u201cepidemic<\/a>\u201d in May of 2023. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are called to build a movement to mend the social fabric of our nation \u2026 each of us can start now, in our own lives, by strengthening our connections and relationships,\u201d reads his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/surgeongeneral\/priorities\/connection\/index.html?utm_source=osg_influencer&amp;utm_medium=osg_influencer&amp;utm_campaign=osg_connect2heal\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/surgeongeneral\/priorities\/connection\/index.html?utm_source=osg_influencer&amp;utm_medium=osg_influencer&amp;utm_campaign=osg_connect2heal\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\"> advisory<\/a> on the healing effects of social connection and community. Those in running groups believe those are good places to start. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think everyone is looking for new friendships as they go through life, and it can get harder as you get older,\u201d Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO of the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nyrr.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">New York Road Runners<\/a> (NYRR), tells <em>Fortune.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1997, he trained for and ran his first marathon alone, and the experience was \u201cjust fine,\u201d he says. \u201cBut it was nothing like when I did it again years later on a team, and met people in the park to train with every day,\u201d he adds. That provided him both accountability and time to socialize, leading to a better time in his next marathon. But running is a nice common ground to have with someone else \u2026 You get something very different out of it when you\u2019re doing it with other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But why running?<\/h2>\n<p>For starters, it\u2019s been long-established that running has many physical benefits\u2014doing so as little as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4131752\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4131752\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">five to 10 minutes a day<\/a>, for example, even at slow speeds, can significantly lower your risk of dying from <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/03\/18\/how-healthy-intermittent-fasting-heart-disease-study-91-percent-risk\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=advanced_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/03\/18\/how-healthy-intermittent-fasting-heart-disease-study-91-percent-risk\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=advanced_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">heart disease<\/a>. It also has a positive impact on brain health. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/the-truth-behind-runners-high-and-other-mental-benefits-of-running#:~:text=%E2%80%9CExercise%20has%20a%20dramatic%20antidepressive,the%20brains%20of%20regular%20exercisers.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/the-truth-behind-runners-high-and-other-mental-benefits-of-running#:~:text=%E2%80%9CExercise%20has%20a%20dramatic%20antidepressive,the%20brains%20of%20regular%20exercisers.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>, regular cardiovascular workouts, like running, can improve working memory and focus, plus boost mood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And a 2020 review in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7663387\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7663387\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health <\/a>associated running with improvements in mental health, particularly in depression and anxiety disorders. The stress hormone, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/cortisol-how-to-lower-stress-hormone\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/cortisol-how-to-lower-stress-hormone\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">cortisol<\/a>, is released through regular exercise, which means running can also be a healthy way to regulate your stress response, according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a60025567\/cortisol-and-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a60025567\/cortisol-and-exercise\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">article<\/a> by <em>Runner\u2019s World<\/em>. Similarly, a 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1755296622000618?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1755296622000618?via%3Dihub\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">study<\/a> showed that physical activity\u2014as long as it\u2019s something that brings enjoyment and is not overly difficult\u2014can decrease feelings of loneliness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re already one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/1743\/running-and-jogging\/#:~:text=Running%20is%20one%20of%20the,U.S.%20in%20the%20same%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/1743\/running-and-jogging\/#:~:text=Running%20is%20one%20of%20the,U.S.%20in%20the%20same%20year.\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">50 million<\/a> Americans who run for exercise, switching things up by joining a group or running with friends could be a simple yet powerful loneliness antidote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you can breathe and eliminate feeling alone, running is a saving grace,\u201d Shawanda Weems, 48, a middle school English language arts teacher and track coach in the Bronx, tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cIt can free you. She says she\u2019s witnessed track bring her students together, and that she\u2019s \u201ccultivated longterm friendships with those same students as they mature into adulthood,\u201d including with Kiara Fernandez Chavez, 28. The pair ran the New York City Marathon together through NYRR in 2016, and Weems says she wouldn\u2019t have done if not for her friend\u2019s motivation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have her suggest that we embark on this adventure was not a goal of mine at the time,\u201d says Weems.
