Future versions of the OS will lean more heavily on the same tech on which Android is based. More specifically, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.chromium.org\/2024\/06\/building-faster-smarter-chromebook.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Google says;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> it will &#8220;be embracing portions of the Android stack, like the Android Linux kernel and Android frameworks, as part of the foundation of ChromeOS.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ChromeOS and Android teams already have some experience of working together, having delivered features like the ability to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2016-06-17-android-apps-are-now-available-on-chrome-os.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:run Android apps on Chromebooks;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">run Android apps on Chromebooks<\/a>. The ChromeOS crew has <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/chromeos.dev\/en\/posts\/androids-bluetooth-stack-fluoride-comes-to-chromeos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:adopted;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> Android&#8217;s Bluetooth tech too.<\/p>\n<p>There are several reasons for this shift, including engineering efficiencies and helping phones and accessories become more compatible with Chromebooks. Google says it will &#8220;continue to deliver the unmatched security, consistent look and feel, and extensive management capabilities that ChromeOS users, enterprises and schools love.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s another major reason for baking more Android tech into ChromeOS: to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/google-is-bringing-a-slew-of-ai-powered-software-features-to-chromebook-plus-laptops-130049652.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:enable more AI features;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>. Google says this approach will help it to roll out new AI tools at a faster and larger scale across more devices. Given that Android devices are where many users will <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/06\/12\/chromeos-android-under-the-hood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:likely;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/google-reverses-course-and-brings-its-gemini-ai-to-the-regular-pixel-8-154329980.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:interact with the company's AI products;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> most often outside of Search, G Suite and Gmail, it&#8217;s not too surprising that Google would want to bring some of the same nous to ChromeOS.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t expect to see the fruits of this labor on your Chromebook anytime soon, though.
