But the end of the pandemic led to a slump, as manufacturers and retailers were faced with increased stockpiles and consumers who stopped buying as much as they returned outside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chip firms hope the AI boom will drive demand for their products, but the CEO of a major German semiconductor firm thinks the industry needs to wait just a bit longer for good times to return.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still at the end of a down cycle,\u201d Michael Heckmeier, CEO of German chip supplier Siltronic, said after the opening of the company\u2019s latest wafer fab in Singapore. \u201c2024 is a transition year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Heckmeier sees the industry recovering next year. \u201cWe are still preparing for the big growth to come\u2026induced by mega trends such as artificial intelligence, electro-mobility, and digitalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some chip companies, like Nvidia and its suppliers, are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/04\/30\/samsung-nvidia-ai-semiconductor-boom-memory-chip-sales-profits-quadruple\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/04\/30\/samsung-nvidia-ai-semiconductor-boom-memory-chip-sales-profits-quadruple\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">already benefiting<\/a> from the AI boom. Nvidia, whose GPUs are key to training large language models, <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.nvidia.com\/news\/press-release-details\/2024\/NVIDIA-Announces-Financial-Results-for-Fourth-Quarter-and-Fiscal-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/investor.nvidia.com\/news\/press-release-details\/2024\/NVIDIA-Announces-Financial-Results-for-Fourth-Quarter-and-Fiscal-2024\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">reported<\/a> a revenue of $60.9 billion in 2023, a 126% jump. <\/p>\n<p>Yet most of the industry is warning that demand could stay restrained this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In April, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world\u2019s largest contract chipmaker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-04-18\/tsmc-posts-first-profit-growth-in-a-year-after-global-ai-boom?sref=nfBouUGg\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-04-18\/tsmc-posts-first-profit-growth-in-a-year-after-global-ai-boom?sref=nfBouUGg\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">scaled back <\/a>its outlook for 2024, warning that the smartphone and personal computer markets remain weak.<\/p>\n<p>That same month, another contract chipmaker, United Microelectronics Corporation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc.com\/upload\/media\/08_Investors\/Financials\/Quarterly_Results\/Quarterly_2020-2029_English_pdf\/2024\/Q1_2024\/UMC24Q1_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.umc.com\/upload\/media\/08_Investors\/Financials\/Quarterly_Results\/Quarterly_2020-2029_English_pdf\/2024\/Q1_2024\/UMC24Q1_report.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">said<\/a> \u201cdemand remains muted\u201d for the automotive and industrial segments due to a slower-than-anticipated pace of \u201cinventory digestion\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Another chip win for Singapore<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Based in Munich, Siltronic manufactures silicon wafers used in the chipmaking process. The company is the only Western wafer manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Siltronic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siltronic.com\/en\/investors\/financial-releases\/ad-hoc-reports\/siltronic-adjusts-guidance-for-the-financial-year-2024-2753757-1714130734.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.siltronic.com\/en\/investors\/financial-releases\/ad-hoc-reports\/siltronic-adjusts-guidance-for-the-financial-year-2024-2753757-1714130734.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">cut<\/a> its 2024 outlook, citing the \u201cfurther development of demand weakness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet on Wednesday, Heckmeier said in his opening speech that new technologies \u201cunderscore the growing demand\u201d for semiconductors and wafers, and that the company is \u201cfully prepared\u201d to meet the demand with its new plant in Singapore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Siltronic has invested $2.2 billion in its new wafer plant, its third in Singapore. The amount is the largest investment in the company\u2019s history. The plant will be able to produce 100,000 wafers per month by the end of the year, and Heckmeier suggested the fab could reach full capacity within five years.\u00a0Siltronic opened its first fab in Singapore in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2023\/11\/01\/singapore-keeps-pace-chipmaking-race-semiconductor-globalfoundries-investment\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2023\/11\/01\/singapore-keeps-pace-chipmaking-race-semiconductor-globalfoundries-investment\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">has won<\/a> several chip-related investments in recent years. GlobalFoundries and UMC\u2013two chipmakers Siltronic works with\u2013announced Singapore investment plans of $4 billion and $5 billion respectively. Last week, a TSMC-backed chipmaker, Vanguard International Semiconductor, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/06\/06\/singapore-carves-out-space-chip-supply-chain-new-plant-nxp-semiconductors-tsmc-vanguard\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/2024\/06\/06\/singapore-carves-out-space-chip-supply-chain-new-plant-nxp-semiconductors-tsmc-vanguard\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a $7.8 billion plant as part of a joint venture with the Netherlands\u2019 NXP Semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>Despite fierce global competition for semiconductor investments from countries large and small, Heckmeier decided it was best to place Siltronic\u2019s investment in well-understood territory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you decide on a new investment, you do all kinds of analysis, energy cost, personal cost, overall environment. That did trigger at the end, the decision not to go for another greenfield place, but to add this factory where we are already here,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Singapore has had semiconductor manufacturing since 1968, and now hosts companies across the supply chain including suppliers, designers, and the chipmakers themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The semiconductor industry now accounts for almost a quarter of Singapore\u2019s added value in manufacturing, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said on Wednesday.
