The owner of X wrote, on<a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1800265431078551973\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:X;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> X<\/a>, that he would ban Apple devices at his companies &#8220;If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level.&#8221;. And to that I say: Go right ahead. And while you\u2019re at it, remove your company&#8217;s software from Apple\u2019s App Store too.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s companies (at least the major ones) currently include Tesla, SpaceX, X, X AI and Neuralink. Even if we\u2019re just talking about phones \u2014 which according to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpointresearch.com\/insights\/us-smartphone-market-share\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Counterpoint Research;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Counterpoint Research<\/a> Apple currently has a 52 percent market share in the US \u2014 around 80,000 of Musk\u2019s 155,000 employees would be subject to the ban, if general statistics hold true. And that\u2019s not counting anyone who uses a Mac computer or iPad. (Note: The lion\u2019s share of these workers would be at Tesla, which employs around 140,000 people.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet-wrapper\" data-embed-anchor=\"d9d90a98-fcab-5cac-a843-7e65b272f630\">\n<blockquote placeholder=\"\" data-theme=\"light\" class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1800265938694193183?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:June 10, 2024;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">June 10, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now as we\u2019ve seen with staff<a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/how-twitter-died-in-2023-and-why-x-may-not-be-far-behind-143033036.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:reductions at X;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> reductions at X<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/tesla-is-reportedly-getting-absolutely-hard-core-about-more-layoffs-according-to-elon-musk-151635645.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tesla;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Tesla<\/a>, Musk&#8217;s management style might best be described as &#8220;willing to shoot himself in the foot.&#8221; But subjecting more than half of his staff to a ban covering one of the most popular gadget makers in the world seems especially obtuse. Yes, all of this would be a headache (especially for the poor souls on his IT teams). But what&#8217;s truly at issue is that, if Elon truly cares about security, he&#8217;s only proposing a half-measure.<\/p>\n<p>Why stop at just banning Apple devices? Surely, the apps his companies makes for iOS are in jeopardy as well. So why not pull the apps for X, Tesla and all the others from Apple\u2019s App Store? They\u2019re selling you down the river.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To no surprise, that statement does not accurately describe Apple and OpenAI\u2019s partnership, which readers quickly pointed out using X\u2019s additional context feature. (On Musk\u2019s own website no less, oh the ignominy!) So despite Musk&#8217;s claims, there doesn\u2019t seem to be a lot of trickery there.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that, as the founder and CEO of a handful of companies, Musk can do what he wants. And in this case, I encourage Elon to follow through.
