Last year, the company plugged the plug on its driverless taxis when one of its cars in its San Francisco fleet hit a pedestrian who was hurled into the driverless taxi\u2019s path by another vehicle and dragged them approximately 20 feet after getting pinned under its tire. <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/california-dmv-suspends-cruises-driverless-permits-181110566.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV);cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> suspended the company\u2019s permits less than a month later. Cruise <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/cruise-lays-off-24-percent-of-its-workforce-164800680.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:laid off;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> nearly a quarter of its workforce and<a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/cruise-drops-nine-executives-in-the-midst-of-an-accident-probe-involving-its-vehicle-044408544.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:dismissed nine of its executives;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> including the company\u2019s co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Kyle Vogy following an investigation into the accident.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Cruise has slowly but surely started showing new signs of life. In April, the company announced it would <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/cruises-robotaxis-return-to-arizona-roads-120038794.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:start redeploying its services in Phoenix;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>. Just as in Houston, Cruise\u2019s cars will still be monitored and operated by humans.
