{"id":230890,"date":"2024-06-11T11:47:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-11T11:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/11\/waze-cofounder-uri-levine-explains-30-day-test-of-new-employees\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:17:23","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:17:23","slug":"waze-cofounder-uri-levine-explains-30-day-test-of-new-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/11\/waze-cofounder-uri-levine-explains-30-day-test-of-new-employees\/","title":{"rendered":"Waze cofounder Uri Levine explains 30-day test of new employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GettyImages-457539558-e1718102834502.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>New hires can\u2019t get a break: Waze\u2019s cofounder Uri Levine has revealed that after endless rounds of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/30\/john-lewis-retail-giant-giving-candidates-questions-before-job-interview-nerves-impact-performance\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/30\/john-lewis-retail-giant-giving-candidates-questions-before-job-interview-nerves-impact-performance\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">interviews<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/29\/gen-z-job-seeker-refused-90-minute-task-recruiter-slammed\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/29\/gen-z-job-seeker-refused-90-minute-task-recruiter-slammed\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">tests<\/a>, under his leadership, they have to spend their first 30 days proving they\u2019re right for the job\u2014or they\u2019re fired.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The traffic and navigation app mastermind and serial entrepreneur told<em> Lenny\u2019s Podcast <\/em>that he started the recruitment practice after noting that \u201cabout half\u201d of the failed startups he spoke to blamed their demise on not having the right team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cscary\u201d part, the Israeli boss added, is that all of them knew which workers weren\u2019t a right fit within weeks of them starting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you knew within the first month that the team is not right and you didn\u2019t do anything, the problem was not that the team was not right,\u201d he adds. \u201cThe problem was that the CEO did not make hard decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Lessons from a 2-time unicorn builder, 50-time startup advisor and 20-time board member | Uri Levine\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cj4ORGGEJcA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Levine has founded 10 companies (including two unicorns and Waze, which he sold to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/06\/11\/its-official-google-buys-waze-giving-a-social-data-boost-to-its-location-and-mapping-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/06\/11\/its-official-google-buys-waze-giving-a-social-data-boost-to-its-location-and-mapping-business\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">$1.1 billion<\/a> in 2013), served on the board of 20, and has advised more than 50 startups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the end, he warned that underperforming employees can corrode company culture, send away top performers and make succeeding as a startup \u201cmission impossible\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s why he advised: \u201cEvery time that you hire someone new, what I really want you to do is mark your calendars for 30 days down the road and ask yourself one question: Knowing what I know today, would I hire this person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the answer is yes, he suggests reaching out to the employee immediately, giving them more equity in the company to buy \u201ctheir loyalty for life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But if the answer is no, he advised: \u201cFire them immediately\u201d\u2014for both their sake and that of the businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re already set on a trajectory of not being successful and they are creating damage to you, to the rest of the team, and to themselves,\u201d Levine said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey deserve to find someplace else that they can be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But it\u2019s a two-way street<\/h2>\n<p>The 30-day review doesn\u2019t have to be limited to new hires. Levine said he uses it for every move he makes\u2014business or personal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything in your life, ask yourself, knowing what you know today, would you do something different? If the answer is yes, then do something different today,\u201d the 59-year-old serial entrepreneur added. \u201cToday is the first day of the rest of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s why the 30-day review applies as much to employers as it does to new hires.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that\u2019s the advice Levine has given his five children, who are in their 20s and 30s, when they\u2019re having career struggles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI basically tell them, if you\u2019re going to work in a place and you don\u2019t like it, then what I want you to do is ask yourself why you are not liking it and whether or not there is something that you can change,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to ask you the same question in 90 days from now and if this still is the case, then quit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why 90 days? Because some decisions take a little more time.
