A little over 12 hours ago, Apple announced<\/a> that OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT would be integrated into its technology, and Tesla<\/a> CEO Elon Musk wasted no time battening down the hatches against the rival technology.<\/p>\n Formerly the world\u2019s richest man, Musk is developing his own artificial intelligence models at EV maker Tesla and startup xAI. <\/p>\n xAI has already released a large language model named Grok<\/a>.<\/p>\n But not only is ChatGPT a competitor to Musk\u2019s own offerings, the entrepreneur also has an acrimonious history with the Sam Altman-led company. <\/p>\n Musk was one of the earliest backers of the AI company and sat as one of its first co-chairs (alongside Altman) when it launched<\/a>.<\/p>\n The relationship soured when Musk left in 2018. A war of words and rival products ensued, culminating in Musk launching an ongoing lawsuit against Altman and OpenAI. <\/a><\/p>\n It\u2019s therefore little surprise to witness Musk\u2019s fury upon hearing Apple\u2019s announcement yesterday that it is \u201cintegrating ChatGPT access into experiences within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, allowing users to access its expertise\u2014as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities\u2014without needing to jump between tools.\u201d<\/p>\n Musk aired his concerns<\/a> about the partnership on his social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIf Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThat is an unacceptable security violation.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.\u201d<\/p>\n A Faraday cage is used to block some electromagnetic fields. <\/p>\n If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation.<\/p>\n \u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 10, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/p>\n Apple outlined a raft of privacy measures related to AI at this week\u2019s Worldwide Developers Conference in California.<\/a><\/p>\n While CEO Tim Cook said the company\u2019s new AI strategy and features, named \u2018Apple Intelligence\u2019 is the \u201cnext big step\u201d for his company, the organization also laid out what it believes is a \u201cnew frontier\u201d for privacy in artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n The cloud intelligence system, named Private Cloud Compute (PCC)<\/a>, was created to \u201cmake sure that personal user data sent to PCC isn\u2019t accessible to anyone other than the user\u2014not even to Apple.\u201d<\/p>\n Apple\u2019s ten-page, near-4,000-word announcement of PCC also promises \u201cmore to come\u201d from the company on user privacy and forms only part of its AI security strategy.<\/p>\n Alongside the reveal of the PCC system\u2014which Apple said independent experts can inspect to verify privacy\u2014the company, with an approximately $3 trillion market cap, specifically addressed concerns relating to OpenAI.<\/p>\n It said: \u201cPrivacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT\u2014their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won\u2019t store requests. ChatGPT\u2019s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account.\u201d<\/p>\n An announcement by OpenAI<\/a> mirrored the pledges: \u201cPrivacy protections are built in when accessing ChatGPT within Siri and Writing Tools\u2014requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users\u2019 IP addresses are obscured.\u201d<\/p>\n Musk is seemingly unconvinced, particularly because Apple is using an outside source instead of building its own. <\/p>\n He wrote on X: \u201cIt\u2019s patently absurd that Apple isn\u2019t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security and privacy. Apple has no clue what\u2019s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They\u2019re selling you down the river.\u201d<\/p>\n Apple and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Fortune\u2019s<\/em> request for comment. <\/p>\n It\u2019s patently absurd that Apple isn\u2019t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!<\/p>\n Apple has no clue what\u2019s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI.
