Former President\u00a0<\/a>Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>called the legitimacy of\u00a0Taylor Swift\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>political beliefs into question in a new excerpt from the book\u00a0Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass<\/em> by\u00a0Variety\u00a0<\/em>editor-in-chief\u00a0Ramin Setoodeh<\/strong>. During an excerpt from one of their interviews, Ramin explained that he\u2019d asked the former reality show host about his thoughts on Taylor.<\/p>\n

During part of the conversation, Trump, 77, explained that he was surprised to learn about Taylor\u2019s political beliefs given her country roots. \u201cShe\u2019s legitimately liberal? It\u2019s not an act? It surprises me that a country star can be successful being liberal,\u201d he said in the excerpt<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Given the former president\u2019s advanced age, he seems to have missed the memo on the fact that Taylor, 34, has shifted away from making country music and ventured into proper pop music with 2014\u2019s\u00a01989<\/em>. Still, it probably shouldn\u2019t be a surprise that Trump isn\u2019t aware that the \u201cShake It Off\u201d singer hasn\u2019t been considered a total country artist for a decade, because when he was asked about her music, he admitted that he wasn\u2019t too familiar with her tunes. The writer noted that he told the Republican presidential candidate about Taylor\u2019s genre leap, but instead, he talked about another left-leaning country singer.\u00a0\u201cGarth Brooks<\/strong> is liberal. Explain that! How does it happen? But he\u2019s liberal,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the conversation, Trump did compliment the \u201cOnly the Young\u201d popstar, mostly focusing in on her physical appearance and fame. \u201cShe\u2019s got a great star quality. She really does,\u201d he said. \u201cI think she\u2019s beautiful\u2014very beautiful! I find her very beautiful. I think she\u2019s liberal. She probably doesn\u2019t like Trump. I hear she\u2019s very talented. I think she\u2019s very beautiful, actually\u2014unusually beautiful!\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor was considered an apolitical artist prior to the 2018 midterm election. The popstar broke her silence on her political views that year by endorsing Democratic candidates in Tennessee\u2019s election. During the 2020 election, she endorsed President\u00a0Joe Biden<\/strong>, and she publicly called out Trump<\/a> in multiple statements on social media. \u201cAfter stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? \u2018When the looting starts the shooting starts\u2019??? We will vote you out in November. @realdonaldtrump,\u201d she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
