Which many considered rich, considering Kutcher is the star of movies like <em>The Butterfly Effect<\/em> and <em>My Boss\u2019 Daughter.<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The replacement for Charlie Sheen for the later half of <em>Two and a Half Men<\/em> decided to share his two cents on A.I. and its potential impact on the entertainment industry. After getting an early look at OpenAI\u2019s generative video tool, Sora, Kutcher gushed about its future implementation while speaking to former <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a> CEO Eric Schmidt at the Berggruen Salon.<\/p>\n<p>Calling the beta version \u201cpretty amazing,\u201d Kutcher said he was able to use it to create a movie of a person running from a desert sandstorm. Taking to the feature like a 9-year old to Minecraft, he appeared to be moved by the early rendering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, in five minutes, rendered a video of an ultramarathoner running across the desert being chased by a sandstorm,\u201d Kutcher said. \u201cI didn\u2019t have to hire a CGI department to do it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201dYou can create good 10-, 15-second videos that look very real. It still makes mistakes. It still doesn\u2019t quite understand physics,\u201d he said. \u201cBut if you look at the generation of this that existed one year ago as compared to Sora, it\u2019s leaps and bounds. In fact, there\u2019s footage in it that I would say you could easily use in a major motion picture or a television show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kutcher, an icon of the early 2000s, has largely left the entertainment industry for the world of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/16\/ashton-kutcher-your-place-or-mine-netflix-vc-fund\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/16\/ashton-kutcher-your-place-or-mine-netflix-vc-fund\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">venture capitalism<\/a>, taking a brief pause to act in the critically and publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2023\/feb\/09\/your-place-or-mine-review-netflix-romcom-reese-witherspoon-ashton-kutcher\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2023\/feb\/09\/your-place-or-mine-review-netflix-romcom-reese-witherspoon-ashton-kutcher\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">panned<\/a> <em>Your Place or Mine<\/em>. Last year, Kutcher and his VC firm, Sound Ventures, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/05\/04\/ashton-kutcher-vc-fund-ai-artificial-intelligence-tech\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/05\/04\/ashton-kutcher-vc-fund-ai-artificial-intelligence-tech\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">raised $243 million<\/a> in five weeks with the purpose of investing in artificial intelligence startups, including OpenAI. So, he has, of course, a horse or a brigade, the game when it comes to Sora.<\/p>\n<p>Kutcher even suggested Sora could take over people\u2019s jobs. \u201cWhy would you go out and shoot an establishing shot of a house in a television show when you could just create the establishing shot for $100,\u201d he asked, claiming that replacing the shot and stunt actor with AI could save thousands of dollars. Sora could render an entire film, he suggested, replacing script writers as well. \u201cInstead of watching some movie that somebody else came up with, I can just generate and then watch my own movie,\u201d Kutcher said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former heartthrob took a stab at getting cerebral, projecting that in the future there\u2019s \u201cgoing to be more content than there are eyeballs on the planet to consume it. So any one piece of content is only going to be as valuable as you can get people to consume it.\u201d In a world with that much content, \u201cthe bar is going to have to go way up, because why are you going to watch my movie when you could just watch your own movie?\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hollywood\u2019s fight against AI, and Ashton<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Kutcher\u2019s comments were badly <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/06\/ashton-kutcher-dragged-comments-making-whole-movies-with-ai-1235960816\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/06\/ashton-kutcher-dragged-comments-making-whole-movies-with-ai-1235960816\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">-received<\/a> by the many writers he suggested would become obsolete in the near future because of the robot that still doesn\u2019t understand physics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Creatives have expressed concern about how the quality of art and implementation of fair wages will be affected by AI, as studios might use an actors\u2019 digital likeness or use chatbots to mine writers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/chatgpt-hollywood-screenwriters-film-tv-1235296724\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/chatgpt-hollywood-screenwriters-film-tv-1235296724\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">words<\/a>. Staving off the unmitigated invasion of AI in Hollywood was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/hollywood-writers-went-on-strike-to-protect-their-livelihoods-from-generative-ai-their-remarkable-victory-matters-for-all-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/hollywood-writers-went-on-strike-to-protect-their-livelihoods-from-generative-ai-their-remarkable-victory-matters-for-all-workers\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">central issues<\/a> of last summer\u2019s Writers <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/guild-instride\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/guild-instride\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">Guild<\/a> of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) strikes. The two unions reached a deal that was called a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2023\/oct\/01\/hollywood-writers-strike-artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2023\/oct\/01\/hollywood-writers-strike-artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">triumph<\/a>,\u201d putting guardrails on executives\u2019 AI outsourcing, but the threats still loom.<\/p>\n<p>One TV writer known for her work on <em>Rick and Morty<\/em>, Caitie Delaney, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/caitiedelaney\/status\/1798750455939686748\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/caitiedelaney\/status\/1798750455939686748\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">tweeted<\/a> that taking people off projects will create a \u201ca hollow, dumbass, pointless shell. TV will have the same artistic merit as dish soap.\u201d She added that Kutcher was \u201ccannibalizing your own industry because you played Steve Jobs in an inferior movie and think you\u2019re a tech genius now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kutcher \u201cseems pretty excited about the prospect of putting countless people out of work by stealing and devaluing their art,\u201d film critic and co-host of <em>The Critically Acclaimed Network <\/em>William Bibibani said, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WilliamBibbiani\/status\/1798469077113229759\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/WilliamBibbiani\/status\/1798469077113229759\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">adding, \u201c<\/a>but the part I can\u2019t get over is how impressed he is that someone spent a billion dollars to invent an inferior version of stock footage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After receiving ridicule, Kutcher walked back his comments slightly, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/aplusk\/status\/1798860274201502108\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/aplusk\/status\/1798860274201502108\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">tweeting<\/a> that he doesn\u2019t \u201cthink AI will replace the film industry or creative arts,\u201d but it\u2019s a tool that will change jobs and that \u201cdenying that is turning a blind eye to facts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It seems that tech\u2019s dreams of implementing AI are playing out on the stage first. Actors, writers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/02\/singers-pump-breaks-billie-eilish-bonjovi-sign-open-letter\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/02\/singers-pump-breaks-billie-eilish-bonjovi-sign-open-letter\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">musicians<\/a> are just one wave petitioning for checks on said invention.\u00a0 \u201cPeople will engage [with AI] for the novelty of entertainment,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/breakingviews\/hollywood-is-first-last-defense-ai-war-2024-05-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/breakingviews\/hollywood-is-first-last-defense-ai-war-2024-05-21\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">wrote<\/a> Reuters columnist Jennifer Saba. \u201cWhat\u2019s untested is whether large technology firms can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/scarlett-johansson-says-openai-chatbot-voice-eerily-similar-hers-2024-05-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/scarlett-johansson-says-openai-chatbot-voice-eerily-similar-hers-2024-05-21\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">get away<\/a> with using people\u2019s image without paying for it.
