{"id":229981,"date":"2024-06-08T19:31:28","date_gmt":"2024-06-08T19:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/08\/rh-ceo-says-i-dont-yell-at-people-i-yell-at-the-problem\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:17:32","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:17:32","slug":"rh-ceo-says-i-dont-yell-at-people-i-yell-at-the-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/08\/rh-ceo-says-i-dont-yell-at-people-i-yell-at-the-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"RH CEO says &#8216;I don\u2019t yell at people\u2014I yell at the problem&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GettyImages-1321777215-e1717868939687.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/rh\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/rh\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">RH<\/a> CEO Gary Friedman has long been known for his soaring rhetoric in the luxury furniture retailer\u2019s quarterly earnings reports and more recently for his stark warnings about the economy and housing market.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>But a weekend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/08\/business\/rh-gary-friedman-luxury.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/08\/business\/rh-gary-friedman-luxury.html\" rel=\"noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/08\/business\/rh-gary-friedman-luxury.html\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\"><em>New York Times<\/em> profile<\/a> highlighted some of his management habits, including his aversion to meetings and preference for \u201cadventures\u201d with groups of executives that resemble meetings but can last 10 hours or more.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged that his vision for RH spooks Wall Street while refusing to hold back on his expansive ambitions, which go well beyond the typical earnings and revenue forecasts that analysts are used to dealing with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut our vision is to create an endless reflection of hope, inspiration and love that will ignite the human spirit and change the world,\u201d Friedman, who became CEO in 2001, told the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>RH, formerly known as Restoration Hardware, was a favorite on Wall Street when shares soared during the early stages of the pandemic as remote work and rock-bottom mortgage rates sparked a housing and renovation boom that boosted furniture sales.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the pandemic, RH caught the attention of Warren Buffett, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/berkshire-hathaway\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/berkshire-hathaway\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">Berkshire Hathaway<\/a> conglomerate began buying shares in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>But then the Federal Reserve began hiking rates in 2022, sending borrowing costs higher and putting the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/05\/top-economist-housing-activity-frozen-market\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/05\/top-economist-housing-activity-frozen-market\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/05\/top-economist-housing-activity-frozen-market\/\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\" rel=\"noopener\">housing market<\/a> into a deep freeze. RH stock tumbled, falling more than 70% from its early 2021 peak to its 2022 low, and <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/rh-stock-price-warren-buffett-berkshire-hathaway-sells-restoration-hardware-2023-5\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/rh-stock-price-warren-buffett-berkshire-hathaway-sells-restoration-hardware-2023-5\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">Berkshire then sold off its entire stake<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Friedman remains ambitious, opening more RH retail \u201cgalleries\u201d while expanding into branded hotels and furnished homes that the company would sell as well as manage.<\/p>\n<p>As he forges ahead with his grand plans, his team is expected to be fully committed to the company\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n<p>RH\u2019s annual leadership meetings once included a ceremony that required executives to promise to \u201ccontinuously destroy my own reality to create tomorrow\u2019s future\u201d and explain how they may have failed, according to the <em>Times<\/em>. That was later replaced by the \u201cDaily Values Adventure,\u201d which asks participants to \u201cshare a time when your ego got in the way of finding a better way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friedman dismissed RH\u2019s low scores from employees on sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/companies\/restoration-hardware\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/companies\/restoration-hardware\" rel=\"noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/companies\/restoration-hardware\" class=\"sc-80b85506-0 ovBKL\">Comparably<\/a>, saying many have worked at the company for years and even some who left eventually returned.
