King Charles III<\/a><\/strong> made his first overseas trip to the 80th anniversary of World War II\u2019s D-Day landings since he was diagnosed<\/a> with cancer<\/a> in France on Thursday, June 6.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow fortunate we were, and the entire free world, that a generation of men and women in the United Kingdom and other Allied nations did not flinch when the moment came to face that test,\u201d the 75-year-old royal stated in French to the Allied soldiers who seized France that same day in 1944 and led to their and Western Europe\u2019s independence from Nazi, Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n

His Royal Highness was accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013 dressed in white \u2013 \u00a0French President Emmanuel Macron<\/a> <\/strong>and France\u2019s First Lady, his wife,\u00a0Brigitte Macron<\/strong> <\/a>at the event in Normandy dressed in his military attire where he continued to share, <\/span>\u201cOn the beaches of Normandy, on the seas beyond, and in the skies overhead, our armed forces carried out their duty with a humbling sense of resolve and determination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In his ceremony speech, he paid homage to those who \u201cnever came home\u201d and expressed that \u201cour gratitude is unfailing and our admiration eternal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The King\u2019s son, Prince William<\/a><\/strong> was also in town \u2013 at Juno Beach \u2013 \u00a0to join Justin Trudeau<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Canadian Prime Minister \u2013 in commemorating the Canadian soldiers who were part of D-Day.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe continue to honor every Canadian, who gave so much, every Canadian family who lost a loved one\u2026Thank you for our freedom.\u201d He then said in French, which has been translated to English, \u201cThank you for your service.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This outing comes three months after the King was diagnosed with cancer. In his statement he noted, \u201cI would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days\u2026 As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the King\u2019s attendance came amid the released statement that the Royal family would not be attending any public gatherings as a result of the general election taking place on July 4. <\/span>As stated by Buckingham Palace on May 22, \u201cFollowing the Prime Minister\u2019s [Rishi Sunak] statement this afternoon calling a general election, the royal family will \u2014in accordance with normal procedure \u2014 postpone engagements that may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign\u2026Their Majesties send their sincere apologies to any of those who may be affected as a result.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
