Teachers typically spent \u00a374 to \u00a383 between September 2023 and March 2024, NFER\u2019s survey of nearly 1,300 teachers and school leaders showed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The issue is worse in primary school than in secondary school, with 79% of teachers spending their money helping students or schools buy items.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndividual teachers, particularly those in disadvantaged schools, are going above and beyond what their school is already doing in order to meet pupils\u2019 basic needs at a time when their own finances may be under pressure,\u201d the report highlighted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Students\u2019 conditions have deteriorated, too, owing to the cost of living crisis. About 40% of primary teachers have reported students being hungry in school and needing more clothing and other educational equipment compared to a year ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeachers and senior leaders in schools are on the front line. They see the immediate impacts of cost-of-living pressures on pupils,\u201d the report said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegardless of whether they have the staff or resources to do so, many may feel compelled to step in to provide urgent support to pupils and their families who are in need.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Continuing troubles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The U.K. has witnessed teachers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/education-63283289\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/education-63283289\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">strikes erupt<\/a> in the last few years due to low pay, underinvestment in schools and high workloads. The National Education Union (NEU), the largest of its kind in Europe, found that most teachers\u201485%\u2014felt underpaid for their work, given their skills and qualifications.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince 2010 teachers\u2019 pay has declined significantly, relative to other workers and in real terms against inflation. Pay levels do not properly value teachers,\u201d said Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of <a href=\"https:\/\/neu.org.uk\/press-releases\/teachers-feel-severely-underpaid#:~:text=A%20snapshot%20survey%20of%204%2C536,say%20their%20pay%20is%20fair\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/neu.org.uk\/press-releases\/teachers-feel-severely-underpaid#:~:text=A%20snapshot%20survey%20of%204%2C536,say%20their%20pay%20is%20fair\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">the NEU<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last July, the four major teaching unions in the <a href=\"https:\/\/educationhub.blog.gov.uk\/2023\/07\/13\/teacher-strikes-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-2023-24-teacher-pay-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/educationhub.blog.gov.uk\/2023\/07\/13\/teacher-strikes-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-2023-24-teacher-pay-award\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">U.K. voted<\/a> in favor of a 6.5% pay rise, which bumped up salaries for starters and veterans in the field.
