It\u2019s an idea for that KILLER<\/strong> blog post that is just bound to bring you all the traffic that you\u2019ve ever dreamed of.<\/p>\n

With the idea fresh in your mind you sit down at your keyboard and BANG<\/strong> it out \u2013 desperate to hit publish as quickly as you can for fear that someone else will beat you to the PUNCH<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

As SMOKE<\/strong> rises from your keyboard you complete your post, quickly add a title to it and proudly hit PUBLISH<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Visions of an avalanche of visitors, incoming links and comments swirl before you\u2026<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But then\u2026<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reality hits you like a SLAP in the face.<\/p>\n

There are few visitors, no comments and no links.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a KILLER<\/strong> post \u2013 but not in a good way \u2013 it\u2019s DEAD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ever had that experience?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have \u2013 many, many times over.<\/p>\n

Today I want to walk you through an alternative workflow for constructing a blog post\u2026<\/p>\n

One\u2026<\/p>\n

That\u2026<\/p>\n

Takes\u2026.<\/p>\n

Time.<\/p>\n

Crafting a Blog Post<\/h2>\n

If there\u2019s one lesson that I\u2019ve learnt about writing for the web it\u2019s that a key element to writing successful blog posts is that in most cases they take time to CREATE.<\/p>\n

I emphasize \u2018create\u2019 because I think too often as bloggers we \u2018PUNCH\u2019 out content as though we\u2019re in a race or under some kind of deadline. It\u2019s almost like we\u2019re on a production line at times \u2013 unfortunately the posts we write often reflect this.<\/p>\n

In this series I want to suggest an alternative approach \u2013 the crafting (or creation) of content.<\/em><\/p>\n

This process is a more thoughtful process that is about crafting<\/em> words and ideas \u2013 shaping<\/em> posts into content that take readers on a journey<\/em>.<\/p>\n

To kick off this series, I want to suggest 10 points to pause at when writing a post on your blog. I\u2019ll include a link to each post that follows in this series as I update them.<\/p>\n

Instead of rushing through a post \u2013 I find that if I pause at these key moments my post rises to a new level of quality and posts tend to get more traction with readers. They don\u2019t guarantee the perfect post \u2013 but they certainly take you a step closer to a good one.<\/p>\n

1. Choosing a Topic<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Take a little extra time defining your topic and the post will flow better and you\u2019ll develop something that matters to readers.<\/p>\n

2. Crafting Your Post\u2019s Title<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Perhaps the most crucial part of actually getting readers to start reading your post when they see it in an RSS reader or search engine results page.<\/p>\n

3. The Opening Line<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

First impressions matter. Once you\u2019ve got someone past your post\u2019s title your opening line draws them deeper into your post.<\/p>\n

4. Your \u2018point\/s\u2019 (making your posts matter)<\/a> <\/strong><\/h3>\n

A post needs to have a point. If it\u2019s just an intriguing title and opening you\u2019ll get people to read \u2013 but if the post doesn\u2019t \u2018matter\u2019 to them it\u2019ll never get traction.<\/p>\n

5. Call to Action<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Driving readers to do<\/strong> something cements a post in their mind and helps them to apply it and helps you to make a deeper connection with them.<\/p>\n

6. Adding Depth<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Before publishing your post \u2013 ask yourself how you could add depth to it and make it even more useful and memorable to readers?<\/p>\n

7. Quality Control<\/a> and Polishing of Posts<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Small mistakes can be barriers to engagement for some readers. Spending time fixing errors and making a post \u2018look\u2019 good can take it to the next level.<\/p>\n

8. Timing of Publishing Your Post<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Timing can be everything \u2013 strategic timing of posts can ensure the right people see it at the right time.<\/p>\n

9. Post Promotion<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Having hit publish \u2013 don\u2019t just leave it to chance that your post will be read by people. Giving it a few strategic \u2018nudges\u2019 can increase the exposure it gets exponentially.<\/p>\n

10. Conversation<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Often the real action happens once your post is published and being interacted with by readers and other bloggers. Taking time to dialogue can be very fruitful.<\/p>\n

Take Your Time<\/h2>\n

Taking extra time at each of these 10 points looks different for me in every post that I do \u2013 but I believe that every extra moment spent of these tasks pays off.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the pause I take in one step will be momentary while in others it could take hours or even days to get it just right. Sometimes the above process happens quite automatically and other times I need to force myself to stop and ponder something like a title or the timing of a post.<\/p>\n

Each of the 10 points above have much more that could be said about them so over the weeks I\u2019ll be tackling each in turn in the hope that we can have some good discussion and sharing of ideas around them. I\u2019ll link to each of them from within the list above as I release the posts.<\/p>\n

For each point I hope to give some insight into how I tackle them and will share a few practical tips and examples of what I\u2019ve done that has worked (and not worked). Don\u2019t expect posts each day on this series \u2013 like all good things \u2013 this will take us some time!<\/p>\n
