{"id":227145,"date":"2024-06-01T22:50:05","date_gmt":"2024-06-01T22:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/01\/the-anc-party-that-freed-south-africa-from-apartheid-loses-its-30-year-majority-signaling-first-ever-coalition-government-to-come\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:18:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:18:08","slug":"the-anc-party-that-freed-south-africa-from-apartheid-loses-its-30-year-majority-signaling-first-ever-coalition-government-to-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/01\/the-anc-party-that-freed-south-africa-from-apartheid-loses-its-30-year-majority-signaling-first-ever-coalition-government-to-come\/","title":{"rendered":"The ANC party that freed South Africa from apartheid loses its 30-year majority, signaling first-ever coalition government to come"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GettyImages-2155133582-e1717279826820.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-anc-decline-cf154312e3dc5c1b5ee615b82ba0c080\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-anc-decline-cf154312e3dc5c1b5ee615b82ba0c080\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">African National Congress<\/a>\u00a0party lost its parliamentary majority in a historic election result Saturday that puts South Africa on a new political path for the first time since the end of the apartheid system of white minority rule 30 years ago.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>With more than 99% of votes counted, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-elections-voter-guide-6876f39a9c14a61c8f94f123cb66d4ce\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-elections-voter-guide-6876f39a9c14a61c8f94f123cb66d4ce\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">once-dominant ANC<\/a>\u00a0had received just over 40% in Wednesday\u2019s election, well short of the majority it had held since the famed all-race vote of 1994 that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-apartheid-freedom-democracy-election-d9269650c2d2c813e9794fda145ef22d\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-apartheid-freedom-democracy-election-d9269650c2d2c813e9794fda145ef22d\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">ended apartheid and brought it to power<\/a>\u00a0under Nelson Mandela.<\/p>\n<p>The final results are still to be formally declared by the Independent Electoral Commission, but the ANC cannot pass 50% and an era of coalition government \u2014 also a first for South Africa \u2014 is looming.<\/p>\n<p>The electoral commission said it would formally declare the results on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>While opposition parties hailed the outcome as a momentous breakthrough for a country struggling with deep poverty and inequality, the ANC remained the biggest party by some way.<\/p>\n<p>However, the unprecedented slump in its support means it will now likely need to look for a coalition partner or partners to remain in the government and reelect President Cyril Ramaphosa for a second and final term. Parliament must meet to elect the South African president within 14 days after the election result is declared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way to rescue South Africa is to break the ANC\u2019s majority and we have done that,\u201d said John Steenhuisen, the leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance party.<\/p>\n<p>Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters opposition party, said that the ANC\u2019s \u201centitlement of being the sole dominant party\u201d was over.<\/p>\n<p>The way forward threatens to be complicated for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/south-africa\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/south-africa\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">Africa\u2019s most advanced economy<\/a>, and there\u2019s no coalition on the table yet. The three main opposition parties and many more smaller ones were in the mix as the bargaining begins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can talk to anybody and everybody,\u201d ANC Chairman Gwede Mantashe said on national broadcaster SABC.<\/p>\n<p>Steenhuisen\u2019s Democratic Alliance was on around 21% of the vote. The new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-zuma-anc-mk-6b18554612c5f6ff636f84352cbecdd5\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-zuma-anc-mk-6b18554612c5f6ff636f84352cbecdd5\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">MK Party<\/a>\u00a0of former President Jacob Zuma, who has turned against the ANC he once led, was third with just over 14% of the vote in the first election it has contested. The Economic Freedom Fighters was fourth with just over 9%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-ramaphosa-anc-parties-44187959a44ddaddadd0ad4b23bebd83\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-ramaphosa-anc-parties-44187959a44ddaddadd0ad4b23bebd83\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">More than 50 parties<\/a>\u00a0contested the election, many of them winning tiny shares, but the three main opposition parties appear to be the most obvious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-vote-explainer-anc-ramaphosa-0e7600dc16bd51e3b6faa6cef6455e24\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-vote-explainer-anc-ramaphosa-0e7600dc16bd51e3b6faa6cef6455e24\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">for the ANC to approach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Electoral commission Chairman Mosotho Moepya said it was a time for everyone to keep calm \u201cand for leaders to lead and for voices of reason to continue to prevail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a moment we need to manage and manage well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Steenhuisen said his party is open to discussions with the ANC, as did Malema. The MK Party said one of their conditions for any agreement was that Ramaphosa is removed as ANC leader and president. That underlined the fierce personal political battle between Zuma, who resigned as South African president under a cloud of corruption allegations in 2018, and Ramaphosa, who replaced him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are willing to negotiate with the ANC, but not the ANC of Cyril Ramaphosa,\u201d MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela said.<\/p>\n<p>MK and the far-left\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-opposition-eff-malema-ef4d87176b5b53e5768eac02fc9b0129\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-opposition-eff-malema-ef4d87176b5b53e5768eac02fc9b0129\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">Economic Freedom Fighters<\/a>\u00a0have called for parts of the economy to be nationalized.<\/p>\n<p>The centrist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-elections-anc-democratic-alliance-3df5ca5aaf213349b8e929bc4408c69c\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-elections-anc-democratic-alliance-3df5ca5aaf213349b8e929bc4408c69c\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">Democratic Alliance<\/a>, or DA, is viewed as business-friendly. Analysts say an ANC-DA coalition would be more welcomed by foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p>DA has been the most critical opposition party for years and doesn\u2019t share the ANC\u2019s pro-Russia and pro-China foreign policy. South Africa takes over the presidency of the Group of 20 industrialized and emerging-market nations next year.<\/p>\n<p>An ANC-DA coalition \u201cwould be a marriage of two drunk people in Las Vegas. It will never work,\u201d Gayton McKenzie, the leader of the smaller Patriotic Alliance party, told South African media.<\/p>\n<p>DA says an ANC-MK-EFF agreement would be a \u201cdoomsday coalition\u201d given MK and EFF are made up of former ANC figures and would pursue the same failed policies.<\/p>\n<p>The three opposition parties had a combined share that was bigger than the ANC, but they are highly unlikely to all work together. The DA was also part of a preelection agreement with other smaller parties to potentially form a coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Amid it all, there was no sense of celebrations from ordinary South Africans, but rather the realization that a rocky political road was ahead. The Daily Maverick newspaper had a South African scratching his head with the words: \u201cWhat Does It Mean For Our Future?\u201d on its front page. The Die Burger newspaper led with an image of about a dozen political parties\u2019 logos going into a meat grinder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-opposition-7993a72a56538198592235b6f957b750\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-opposition-7993a72a56538198592235b6f957b750\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">South African opposition parties<\/a>\u00a0were united in one thing \u2014 something had to change in the country of 62 million, which is Africa\u2019s most developed but also one of the most unequal in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The official unemployment rate is 32% and the poverty disproportionately affects Black people, who make up 80% of the population and have been the core of the ANC\u2019s support for years. The violent crime rate is also appallingly high.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC has also been blamed \u2014 and now punished by voters \u2014 for a failure in basic government services\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-poverty-anc-vote-c9ce37716f1e31cf305361c4469a58e9\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-election-poverty-anc-vote-c9ce37716f1e31cf305361c4469a58e9\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">that impacts millions<\/a>\u00a0of poor, and leaves many without water, electricity or proper housing. More recently, a national electricity crisis that led to nationwide power blackouts angered South Africans across the board.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC has seen a steady decline in its support over the last 20 years, but by around three to five percentage points each election. It dropped 17 percentage points this time from the 57.5% it won in 2019, a staggering outcome in the context of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 28 million South Africans were registered to vote, and turnout was expected to be around 60%, according to the electoral commission.<\/p>\n<p>People lined up deep into the cold winter night on election day and hours after the official poll closing time, with some votes being cast at 3 a.m. the following day.
