And <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/costco\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/costco\/\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">Costco<\/a> will always offer its signature hot-dog-and-drink combo for $1.50, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/07\/12\/costco-ceo-hot-dog-combo-inflation-answer\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/07\/12\/costco-ceo-hot-dog-combo-inflation-answer\/\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">same price<\/a> it\u2019s been for nearly four decades, regardless of who heads the retailer or what else it sells.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The legendary wiener, along with Costco\u2019s nearly-as-famous $5 rotisserie chicken, are \u201cfoundational\u201d to the warehouse chain\u2019s success, Richard Galanti, who recently stepped down as chief financial officer, told <em>Fortune\u2019s <\/em>Phil Wahba in a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/28\/costco-retail-walmart-wholesale-membership-management\/?asdafs\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/28\/costco-retail-walmart-wholesale-membership-management\/?asdafs\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">recent deep dive<\/a> into the warehouse club\u2019s stunning success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Galanti told the <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>the $1.50 price was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-1-50-costco-hot-dog-combo-that-defies-inflation-11657753870\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-1-50-costco-hot-dog-combo-that-defies-inflation-11657753870\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">sacrosanct<\/a>,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/26\/costco-cfo-says-hot-dog-and-soda-combo-price-is-forever.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/26\/costco-cfo-says-hot-dog-and-soda-combo-price-is-forever.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">declared<\/a> to investors that the dogs\u2019 price point would stay fixed \u201cforever.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Galanti\u2019s successor as CFO, Gary Millerchip, this week reiterated that commitment. \u201cI also want to confirm the $1.50 hot dog price is safe,\u201d Millerchip told CNN reporter Nathaniel Meyersohn, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nmeyersohn\/status\/1796297084691431661\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/nmeyersohn\/status\/1796297084691431661\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">X<\/a> post.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Costco will overhaul its entire hot-dog supply chain before it will raise the price of the dog. When Costco introduced the $1.50 combo in 1985, it sourced its kosher beef dogs from Hebrew National. But by 2009, costs had gone up so much that the warehouse club brought production in-house. It built a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/547020\/costco-150-hot-dog-soda-combo-enigma\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/547020\/costco-150-hot-dog-soda-combo-enigma\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">plant outside Los Angeles<\/a> to produce Signature Kirkland hot dogs (not kosher), and later expanded production to add a second plant in the Chicago area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Same thing with the soda part of the combo: When Costco\u2019s contract with <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/coca-cola\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/coca-cola\/\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">Coca-Cola<\/a> was up for renewal a decade ago, the retailer instead switched to Pepsi to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bevnet.com\/news\/2013\/pepsicos-in-the-club-store-that-is-capturing-costco-food-service-account\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bevnet.com\/news\/2013\/pepsicos-in-the-club-store-that-is-capturing-costco-food-service-account\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">save on prices<\/a>. To avoid San Francisco\u2019s tax on sugary drinks, Costco chose to serve only die<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Sugary-Drinks-Tax-San-Francisco-Costco-diet-sodas-12841671.php\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Sugary-Drinks-Tax-San-Francisco-Costco-diet-sodas-12841671.php\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">t sodas or unsweetened tea<\/a> in its food courts.<\/p>\n<p>That commitment to a rock-bottom price stretches all the way back to the warehouse club\u2019s founder, Jim Sinegal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Sinegal\u2019s successor and onetime CEO Craig Jelinek explained back in 2018, he once suggested to Sinegal that the price of the money-losing dogs should be raised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to [Sinegal] once and I said, \u2018Jim, we can\u2019t sell this hot dog for a buck fifty. We are losing our rear ends,\u2019\u201d Jelinek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.425business.com\/news\/costco-ceo-craig-jelinek-on-shareholders-costco-com-and-hot-dogs\/article_5ff4b632-1f75-5e98-b9ff-6e02d676668b.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.425business.com\/news\/costco-ceo-craig-jelinek-on-shareholders-costco-com-and-hot-dogs\/article_5ff4b632-1f75-5e98-b9ff-6e02d676668b.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">recalled<\/a> at a business event near Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>Sinegal\u2019s response: \u201cIf you raise the effing hot dog, I will kill you. Figure it out,\u201d Jelinek continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s all I really needed,\u201d he said. Bringing production in-house, he added, eventually enabled the store to turn a profit on the popular menu item even at a $1.50 price tag. Today, Costco sells nearly 200 million hot dogs a year from its food courts, <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s Wahba reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The importance of low prices<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>But why is it so critical to keep the price frozen at $1.50\u2014what one online user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fermiparasocks\/status\/1796392640109576477\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/fermiparasocks\/status\/1796392640109576477\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">dubbed<\/a> \u201cthe most stable commodity on earth\u201d? After all, Costco has raised plenty of other prices throughout its stores, and periodically adjusts its membership fee upward.<\/p>\n<p>As Galanti <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/28\/costco-retail-walmart-wholesale-membership-management\/?asdafs\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/28\/costco-retail-walmart-wholesale-membership-management\/?asdafs\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> to <em>Fortune<\/em>, the price is there to send a message. A $5 chicken and $1.50 dog \u201csignal that Costco is holding the line on low prices.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same message as sent by Costco\u2019s heavily discounted TV and appliances, strategically stocked by the members\u2019 entrance, as new CEO Ron Vachris told <em>Fortune. <\/em>\u201cYou come in and say, \u2018Wait, I can recoup my $60 membership with one item?\u2019\u2009\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>That strategic bolstering of Costco\u2019s reputation helps engender huge loyalty among its 120 million-plus members, and keeps them coming back, retail consultant Kathy Gersch told <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cPeople tell themselves, \u2018Costco has done the research for me, and they know this is the best one,\u2019\u2009\u201d she notes.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of the reasons that more than 90% of Cosctco\u2019s members renew their membership every year. And, regardless of how much merchandise Costco sells or what it costs, it\u2019s that membership that truly pays the bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important item we sell is the membership card,\u201d Vachris told <em>Fortune. <\/em>\u201cEverything we do supports that transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Wahba reports, the $60 annual membership fee (or $120 for additional perks) made up two-thirds of Costco\u2019s profit in any given year, and in several recent years, the retailer would have posted a net loss were it not for membership fees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The hot dog\u2019s iconic status means its price is now Costco lore.
