Though some people are attempting to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41575-021-00528-z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confront the feelings of shame<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that come up when talking about it, we still have quite a long way to go, and no time to waste.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of waste: the release of untreated urban wastewater poses a real threat to the environment and subjects local communities to pollution. As it stands today, Europe\u2019s two opposite shores are both soaked in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The picturesque Sea of Marmara has been suffocating under Istanbul\u2019s untreated and undetreated sewage since the 1980s. In his European Press Prize nominated article for Eurozine, \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/an-ode-to-marmara\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An ode to Marmara<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019, Kaya Genc tracked the ensuing phytoplankton outbreaks, colloquially called the \u2018sea snot crisis\u2019, which has led to fish species populations dropping from 127 different species in 1915, to only 20 in 2010.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following Brexit, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/aug\/25\/uk-sewage-in-channel-waters-unacceptable-say-french-meps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the UK has let loose on<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> environmental standards to protect marine and human health, by dumping sewage straight into the English Channel and North Sea. On average, there are 825 spills into its waterways per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean water and sanitation are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=SDG_6_-_Clean_water_and_sanitation&amp;oldid=574246#Clean_water_and_sanitation_in_the_EU:_overview_and_key_trends\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6th Sustainable Developmental Goal the EU is addressing,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but there are major differences between member states in how they handle their shit.\u00a0 According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/activities\/addressing-sanitation-challenges-in-the-european-region\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO in the European region<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u2018more than 36 million people lack access to basic sanitation services\u2026\u2019 and this access is extremely unequal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<section id=\"poop\" class=\"my1 infobox infobox-og hide-desktop infobox-red\">\n<div style=\"margin:0!important;\">\n<article>\n<figure class=\"hide-mobile\" style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 20px;\"><a class=\"block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/an-ode-to-marmara\/\"><picture class=\"block w100\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/348575f483669e35e68170a1733eca0a.jpeg 272w,https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/d72284e22ff0cdfb41debef99d9cfe0f.jpeg 544w\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:0!important\" class=\"block w100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/348575f483669e35e68170a1733eca0a.jpeg\" alt=\"Cover for: An ode to Marmara\"\/><br \/>\n      <\/source><\/picture><\/a><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"hide-mobile\">\n<\/aside>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin:0!important;\">\n<article>\n<figure class=\"hide-mobile\" style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 20px;\"><a class=\"block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/resurrecting-the-soil\/\"><picture class=\"block w100\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/2e5fba4cfd9a67e108d9a2bb40da0be3.jpg 272w,https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/b50f13efd9c4832669c33ba5ebda6709.jpg 544w\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:0!important\" class=\"block w100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/2e5fba4cfd9a67e108d9a2bb40da0be3.jpg\" alt=\"Cover for: Resurrecting the soil\"\/><br \/>\n      <\/source><\/picture><\/a><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"hide-mobile\">\n<\/aside>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>In urban areas, access to public toilets is often severely restricted, and the right to basic hygiene weighs down on poor and unhoused people. Tessza Udvarhelyi <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes about how governments want to create<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the \u2018ideal of the clean city\u2019 for tourists, resulting in poor and racialized minorities being pushed to the margins of it. This form of urban segregation is mainly informed by the dogma of \u2018cleanliness\u2019, rooted in the 18th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, ever since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/refugeesmigrants.un.org\/zh\/node\/100045294\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France\u2019s decision to dismantle the so-called \u2018Calais Jungle\u2019 camps in 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, human rights experts have been urging the country to provide asylum seekers living there with safe water and sanitation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, draining sewage is only one half of the problem. Treating wastewated is wholly another, and a gigantic task at that. Of course, the waste that goes down the drains contains a lot of contaminants and toxins <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but it could also be a resource. New technologies are attempting to address this problem, sometimes by rethinking very old methodologies, such as plant filtering and composting regimes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though composting and using urban waste as fertilizer is proposed as a sustainable solution,\u00a0 there is a reluctance to use it due to the toxic materials and chemicals found in it. But as Kate Brown puts it in her article for Estonian journal Vikerkaar on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/resurrecting-the-soil\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resurrecting the soil<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u2018If people realize that what they flushed down the toilet comes back to them on their dinner plates, then they might be more thoughtful both about what they consume and toss down the drain.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So poop contains multitudes: pathogens and nutrients, human rights issues, industrial challenges, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Today\u2019s guests\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/worldprojects.columbia.edu\/node\/579\"><b>\u00c9va Tessza Udvarhelyi<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an anthropologist and environmental psychologist. She is the co-founder of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kozeletiskolaja.hu\/what-do-we-do\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School of Public Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a grassroots civic education initiative dedicated to building a democratic and just Hungary. She is also the co-founder of a grassroots housing advocacy group called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/guerrillafoundation.org\/grantee\/the-city-is-for-all\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The City is for All<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has been mobilizing homeless people and their allies for housing rights. Until very recently, Tessza was the Head of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jozsefvaros.hu\/english\/2022\/08\/participation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Office of Community Participation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Municipality of the 8th District of Budapest, and now she runs the campaign of an independent candidate for district mayor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.organicawater.com\/co-founder-story-urban-wastewater-cycle\/\"><b>Attila Gy\u00f6rgy<\/b> <b>Bodn\u00e1r <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an architect, entrepreneur, and executive vice president of Organica Water; a company that offers cost and space-efficient botanical garden-like solutions for wastewater treatment. Its mission is to show the world that wastewater treatment can be safe and aesthetically pleasing, while also making the world a more sutanainable place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Vince Bakos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a biochemical engineer and assistant professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
