The communities living in the affected regions bear the brunt of these adverse effects. Garment workers, furthermore, are subjected to horrible working conditions, and often work below the poverty line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the rise of consumers\u2019 awareness and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/09\/business\/bangladesh-wage-hike-protests-fashion\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worker protests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many companies turn to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.uk\/news\/fashion-greenwash-report-companies-hiding-true-environmental-costs-fast-fashion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greenwashing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to promote themselves as sustainable, while continuing their exploitative practices. Yet activists and NGOs refuse to settle for pretence: they want to structurally challenge the fast-fashion industry. They lobby for stricter legislation, industry transparency, and propose alternatives that allow us to reimagine how we consume the clothes on our backs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The space for ethical designers seems to be ever-shrinking, but many remain hopeful. We ask our guest speakers about the possibilities of building a sustainable fashion industry where creative cooperation and style can still thrive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gertrude Klaffenb\u00f6ck <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received her diploma in Agricultural Economics from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, and later a Master\u2019s of Science in Ecotoxicology &amp; Environmental Management at the FH Technikum Vienna. After a long career in both S\u00fcdwind and FIAN Austria, she now works as a coordinator for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanclothes.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean Clothes Campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aims to improve labour rights in the global clothing industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"il\">Laura<\/span>\u00a0\u0218tef\u0103nu\u021b <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a Bucharest-based investigative journalist, and a 2019 Milena Jesensk\u00e1 fellow at the Institute for Human Science, Vienna. She is also the founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hainecurate.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haine CURATE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which provides legal assistance to garment workers in Romania and informs them about their rights. Her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/made-in-the-eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the Eastern European garment industry have appeared in outlets like Reuters, Balkan Insight, and Arte TV, and she is currently working on a book about EU garment workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mehahahahah\/\"><b>Meha Jhajharia<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Kolkata-Vienna-based multimedia visual artist currently doing their Master\u2019s in biomathematics at the University of Vienna. They research methods of using climate change trajectories to track developments in political movements with the help of mathematical modeling.
