There are millions \u2013 possibly billions \u2013 of them. Yet for a century or so, scientists have paid them very little attention.<\/p>\n<p>This neglect might not have mattered were it not for <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10750-016-3007-0\">increasing evidence<\/a> that ponds are extremely important habitats for wildlife. Across many landscapes, they are being shown to support more freshwater plant and animal species than rivers or lakes.
