The universal emotion of grief is felt by all, and expressed differently across cultures and religions. Throughout East Asia and the Mediterranean, professional mourners are hired to accompany the dead person\u2019s family and community, whereas in places like Indonesia, crying is not encouraged, and many rituals around the world choose to celebrate the deceased person\u2019s life through joy and dance instead, or even in spite of the pain of their loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout Europe as well, rituals surrounding grief and mourning vary; from the solemnity of a Catholic funeral in Italy to the joyous celebrations of life in Spain\u2019s Day of the Dead, the continent embraces a wide spectrum of approaches to bid farewell to loved ones.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Germany, cremation is a common practice and is seen as a form of natural burial \u2013 even though many activists draw attention to its high emission levels of both CO2 and toxic fumes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a growing movement towards more nature-friendly technologies, reflecting a shift in European attitudes towards death and the environment. Instead of elaborate coffins and heavily polluting embalming chemicals, some people choose biodegradable materials and eco-friendly practices, allowing their bodies to return to the earth in a harmonious cycle of life and death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death is also an economic question, as most burial practices are extremely expensive, and their financing can sometimes bankrupt grieving families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the EU\u2019s confines, mourning and bereavement are contested topics.\u00a0 The peril of refugees trying to make their way into Europe has flooded Mediterranean shores with unforeseeable amounts of dead bodies, prompting people to ask the question: are all lives seen as worth the same? Are we equal in death?<\/p>\n<section id=\"immortalism\" class=\"my1 infobox infobox-og hide-desktop infobox-red\">\n<div style=\"margin:0!important;\">\n<article>\n<figure class=\"hide-mobile\" style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 20px;\"><a class=\"block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/political-immortalism-and-its-extremes\/\"><picture class=\"block w100\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8c4ea997881023c33887b7abfda75397.jpg 272w,https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/748bc23e665274c69a61c69d162c4c21.jpg 544w\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:0!important\" class=\"block w100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8c4ea997881023c33887b7abfda75397.jpg\" alt=\"Cover for: Political immortalism and its extremes\"\/><br \/>\n      <\/source><\/picture><\/a><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"hide-mobile\">\n<\/aside>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some bodies are contested for other reasons \u2013 LGBTQIA+ funerals address a gap between one\u2019s lived reality and the heteronormative rituals of conventional burials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Today\u2019s guests\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kulturtrauer.net\/wer-wir-sind\/team\/yvonno-leeb\/\"><b>Yvonno Leeb<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buries and lectures on the topics of process-oriented burials, caring for the dead, as well as queer death. They have been working in funerals since 2019 and helped design the undertaker training program in the Berlin-based non-profit organization Kultur Trauer offering educational and cultural programs on death. They are also one of the co-founders of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herold.at\/gelbe-seiten\/wien\/CVbWf\/tamo-bestattungen-gmbh\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamo Burials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Vienna.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aaa.dieangewandte.at\/abschlussarbeiten\/anastasia-smirnova-circumitus\"><b>Anastasia Smirnova<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently received her MA in architecture from the University of Applied Arts Vienna, working on her project <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sweednes.tilda.ws\/diploma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circumitus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The initiative places small pavilions at the Vienna Central Cemetry to support grieving individuals, and to introduce fresh rituals that alter our traditional perceptions of cemeteries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ierm.univie.ac.at\/ueber-uns\/team\/stefan-dinges\/\"><b>Stefan Dinges<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a theologian,\u00a0 consultant, mediator, and medical ethicist at the Institute for Ethics and Law in Medicine at the University of Vienna. He is part of the team at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letztehilfeoesterreich.at\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letzte Hilfe \u00d6sterreich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, providing courses to the public on end-of-life assistance and care for the dying.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally an architect and interior designer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambrozynoemi.hu\/\"><b>No\u00e9mi Ambr\u00f3zy <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changed her career path after becoming a mother of two hearing-impaired children. She is a certified <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/people\/No%C3%A9mi-Ambr%C3%B3zy-Parenting-Grief-Educator-Embodiment-coach\/61555602684715\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grief educator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and instructor at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handinhandparenting.org\/instructor\/noemi-ambrozy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hand in Hand Parenting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
