{"id":225830,"date":"2024-05-30T06:10:25","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T06:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/30\/tiktok-populism-eurozine\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:18:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:18:27","slug":"tiktok-populism-eurozine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/30\/tiktok-populism-eurozine\/","title":{"rendered":"TikTok populism | Eurozine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"main-text\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0May 9th marks the anniversary of the 1950 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/european-union.europa.eu\/principles-countries-history\/history-eu\/1945-59\/schuman-declaration-may-1950_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schuman Declaration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community that would merge economic interests. It was the first step towards unifying great powers of Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the aftermath of the Second World War, the prospect of peace and unity brought countries together, eventually birthing the European Parliament in 1958. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/european-union.europa.eu\/principles-countries-history\/history-eu_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the EU has grown exponentially, geographically and in institutional maturity. For at least a decade though, it has been witnessing a steady rise in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grforum.global\/media\/4-key-challenges-of-eu-affairs-in-2023-what-is-at-government-relations-stake-17\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right-wing populism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, social fragmentation, economic crises, and Euroscepticism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"TikTok Populism: Standard Time talk show S1E21\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8aikq1-Cxyo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Find the show in podcast format on the Cultural Broadcasting Archive, or on any podcast aggregator by the name Standard Time talk show.<br \/><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; width: 100%; height: 220px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cba.media\/662643\/embed?audio&amp;q=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"220\"><\/iframe><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One core problem is that the population of the member states tends to engage with the EU through their local politics. European Parliamentary elections tend to have lower attendance than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurac.edu\/en\/blogs\/eureka\/david-vs-goliath-of-voter-turnout-why-is-the-participation-in-eu-elections-so-low\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national and local elections do<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this is due to the reason that for most citizens, EU elections just feel too far removed from their daily lives, and are considered secondary.<\/p>\n<section id=\"europeday\" class=\"my1 infobox infobox-og hide-desktop infobox-red\">\n<\/section>\n<p> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU\u2019s reputation seems to have improved somewhat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/results.elections.europa.eu\/en\/turnout\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since the last 2019 elections.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In comparison to 2014, there was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2024\/01\/25\/european-elections-how-engaged-are-young-people\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 50% increase in young voters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this increase, many are still disengaged, with some not even having any idea when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/guide-june-2024-european-union-parliament-meps-poll-of-polls-election-9-charts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voting dates are in their respective countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With technologization, the nature of voting has also drastically changed. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/BRIE\/2023\/754634\/EPRS_BRI(2023)754634_EN.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over half of the EU\u2019s youth rely on social media for information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which makes them susceptible to digital propaganda. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/tiktok-far-right-european-parliament-politics-europe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The far-right has discovered TikTok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, and is now using it to gain votes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democratic participation is one of the highlight topics of the Maastricht Debates, where the top candidates of European parties address three priorities chosen by Europeans. The two other themes are Climate Change and Foreign Policy, which we will also be covering on this show in the coming months,\u00a0 as the European Parliamentary Elections unfold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Today\u2019s guests<\/h3>\n<p><b>Ivana Dragi\u010devi\u0107 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an award-winning journalist, author, and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/europefuturecentre.com\/\">Europe Future Center<\/a>. She is the Editor-at-large on N1 Television, an exclusive CNN affiliate for the Adria-Balkans Region. Ivana is the author of multiple documentaries, including the series Voters 2024 and Future of Europe in cooperation with the European Parliament, as well as the two acclaimed books \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/n1info.hr\/english\/news\/a304976-n1-reporter-ivana-dragicevic-presents-her-new-book\/\">(Un)equals<\/a> (2018), on global order and inequality, and (Un)secured, on the future of security in the world (2023.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Andr\u00e9 Wilkens <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/culturalfoundation.eu\/\">European Cultural Foundation<\/a> in Amsterdam. He is also the Board Chair of <a href=\"https:\/\/tacticaltech.org\/about\/\">Tactical Tech Cooperative<\/a>, the co-founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/offenegesellschaft.org\/\">Initiative Offene Gesellschaft<\/a>, and a founding member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecfr.eu\/\">European Council on Foreign Relations<\/a>. He works on European and international affairs, equality, climate change, and a more human digital world. He is the author of two books on Europe and Digitalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwm.at\/fellow\/michael-zeller\"><b>Michael Zeller <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an Assistant Professor in comparative politics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. He earned his PhD from the Central European University, and worked on the project: <a href=\"http:\/\/brave-h2020.eu\/\">\u2018Building Resilience against Violent Extremism and Polarisation\u2019 (BRaVE)<\/a>. He is currently a fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, researching Right Wing Extremism (RWE) in Europe.
