\u00a0May 9th marks the anniversary of the 1950 <\/span>Schuman Declaration<\/span><\/a>, which proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community that would merge economic interests. It was the first step towards unifying great powers of Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n In the aftermath of the Second World War, the prospect of peace and unity brought countries together, eventually birthing the European Parliament in 1958. <\/span>Since then<\/span><\/a>, the EU has grown exponentially, geographically and in institutional maturity. For at least a decade though, it has been witnessing a steady rise in <\/span>right-wing populism<\/span><\/a>, social fragmentation, economic crises, and Euroscepticism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
