While they certainly aren\u2019t the only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pollinators, they are the most effective, spending most of their life collecting pollen to feed their offspring. As they continue to vanish due to a range of causes, from industrialized agriculture to global warming, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetbee.org\/planet-bee-blog\/\/the-bee-in-popular-culture-savethebees#:~:text=The%20%23SaveTheBees%20movement%20became%20popular,mostly%20due%20to%20human%20intervention.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">individual efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at bee conservation are on the rise. The popularization of the #SaveTheBees movement in the 2010s led people to call for creating pollinator habitats, decreasing the use of pesticides and investing in beehives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A crisis was declared in 2006 when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.perc.org\/2017\/07\/20\/how-capitalism-saved-the-bees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beekeepers began<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noticing the disappearance of their colonies over winter: a phenomenon called colony collapse disorder. Campaigning about honeybees has raised awareness of the loss of other native, non-honey-producing wild bees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beekeeping is not just a hobby but also a way to reconnect with nature and our surrounding environment. This is crucial in times where we have become alienated from the species that sustain our lives, whether through a direct transactional relationship, as with the honeybee that produces the wax and liquid gold we consume today, or through a more symbiotic relationship, where we depend on wild bees to pollinate our crops.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42949-021-00046-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in urban hives is often too rapid for existing plant resources to maintain bee colonies, and might negatively impact biodiversity. So, what is a benevolent and responsible bee enthusiast to do?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Today\u2019s guests\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sarahwaring.co.uk\/\"><b>Sarah Waring<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a staff editor at Eurozine and author of the book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernbeebooks.co.uk\/products\/waring-farming-for-the-landless\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farming for the Landless: New perspectives on the cultivation of our honeybee.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 She has written extensively on beekeeping as a farming practice across Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Harald Kicker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a beekeeper from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sonnwendgarten.at\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonnwendgarten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Vienna, a community garden in the 10th district, where members are getting active and creating a place for gardening and neighbourly exchange.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/authors\/simon-gergely\/\"><b>Gergely Simon <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an environmental chemist and a regional toxic expert at Greenpeace CEE. He is also the Senior Chemicals officer of the Pesticide Action Network Europe.
